LG Electronics Invests $578 Meeeellion in Plasma

For those of you (OK, us) who thought plasma was not advancing at a fast enough pace to keep up with emerging digital technologies, South Korea's LG Electronics begs to differ. LG has planned to invest over half a billion dollars next near to meet the growing demand for plasma screens. The increased spending wil allow LG to increase the monthly output of plasma displays by 120,000 sheets.

Of course, LG is also staying on top of LCD production as well, not willing to take a gamble on either technology - or perhaps just smart enough to know that there is a significant market for both right now. Either way, LG Philips LCD plans to invest over 20 billion dollars into flat screens over the next 10 years. Demand for flat screens is expected to double this year, so news of increasing manufacturing capacity is music to our ears!

Plasma Development

It's good to hear that some manufacturers are still working to enhance plasma display technology. There is lots of room to improve the lifespan, energy efficiency, and other issues that limit the practicallity of plasma displays. I've heard that the upcoming Panasonic plasma lineup will have plasma displays with much better lifespan, challenging LCD displays in lifespan expectancy. This will hopeful have other manufactures make similar improvements in their products and create more competition with LCD so that ordinary consumers like us can have wall-hanging TV's for even better prices.

There is simply so much promise behind the flat plasma panel display pining to be explored. To start with, it's space efficient, energy efficient and offers color brillance rivalling direct-view TVs. That such a display form factor would be the wave of the future for home entertainment and even office use borders on certain inescapability.
