LG DVD recorder/player $ VCR

I am seting up the Home Theater and have the following equipment:
Yamaha A/V receiver 2500
Denon 2910 DVD Player

I also have a ton of VHS tapes both home videos and commerical. I would like to be able to play the VHS's on occassion, but would really like to copy the home vid's to DVD. To that end I have been looking at DVD recorder/VCR combo unit. One I am interested in is the LG. It says it will record and play all the formats DVD-RW, DVD-+RW, and DVD-RAM. I plan on the Denon being my primary source for DVD however.

Anyone have any experience or insight regarding the LG unit? Thanks in advance for any info.

No experience, but remember, you can't copy most commercial VHS tapes to DVD due to macrovision protection. Just playback. In the VHS world, I would take a fairly minimalistic approach unless your pockets are deep.

Just the home videos, dauther's gymnastic competitions, christmas, etc.

Thanks, figured the commerical VHS were out of bounds, really just wanted to copy my home videos of family events.

If that's the case, you might be better off hooking up your VCR to a computer with VIVO (many video cards have this feature) and a DVD burner. No sense spending money on a piece of equiptment that will be in use for less than a week.
As for movies, throw them in the fireplace. Tape is a dead format for any type of media!

Thanks, the computer idea makes sense. About throwing the movies into the fireplace, not as long as some "collector" is willing to pay premium prices for old VHS copies of films, especially Disney animated ones. The technology may have changed, but human nature remains the same.

I feel sorry for anyone who "collects" old tapes. In 20 years, all he'll be able to do is use them to bind wood together to make a raft (see movie- Cast Away). The only movie I've yet to see on DVD that was formerly on VHS (and dying to get a hold of) is Cornel Wildes' The Naked Prey.
On a side note, my hot sauce collection is probably worth close to $3000.00 (most of that in 6 bottles). That's some real collecting!
