LG BD570 vs Panasonic DMP-BD85K

I'm looking into these two stand alones, they seem pretty even as far as performance and they are about the same price. Both can be found for under $200. Between these two which would be the better choice, as far as the better performer? Or would it be worth it to go up to $300 for the Oppo BDP-80 or a used Pioneer Elite BDP-05?

If I get the Pani or the LG, I can budget for an entry turntable like the Pio PL-990.

I believe CNET picked the LG over the Panny by a small margin. Based on my experience with the players, I'd probably pick the Panny myself, however I don't think that either will disappoint. If you have a collection of SACDs and DVD-As already then it would be worth it to move up to the Oppo.

Why do you need the mch analogs? Your receiver handles lossless audio via HDMI, right? That will save you about $80 right there.

My impressions between the two brands are that LG is the WTG as far as streaming features (assuming you get the right player), and that Pana is a solid value with excellent reliability and FW support (they own the majority of Bluray patents). Forest Man had bad luck with his Pana, I forget after how many years, but that's a rarity so far that I have seen.

The BD65 is under $120. Solid price for a solid player.

Yes the BD65 does look like a great choice, the 85 has features that I really dont need. Thanks for saving me some $$$ ! I tend to do that alot and think that the step up model is alway going to be the better choice... Much appreciated!

I've also been looking at the Sony BDP-S370, from all my searches it seems pretty comparable to the Pani BD65. I dont know if this is going to boil down to just a matter of personal preference

If you ask me buy which one is cheaper. I had tested the s550 and bd55 and found little to discern between the two. I eventually retuned both and went with the BD35 like in your case and chose panny because they held most of the BR patents...

Thanks, I am leaning toward the the BD65, for the price I dont think I can beat it, just wanted to make sure that the extra $30 for the 370 really wasnt worth it. All Im using it for is BD playback, no streaming, BD live or upconversion. I think I will go ahead and pull the trigger on it soon.

Then get the Panny. You know, I don't know how important every penny is to you, but since you do have a player already, and if you are very regular on these boards, it may pay to wait for Black Friday time.

When I got my last player, it was from exactly a sale like that, posted in the deals forum by Adam. A bunch of us got one. It was like $115 for the player, add $10 more for UP bluray, add $10 for Cars and Monsters together, meaning $135 for 3 fun Pixar movies and the player . . . .

But, 3 months is like an eternity with this hobby, sometimes. :p

Amazon sales rock. I got my BD65 for $129 with 3 free BDs. I got my BD60 at Tiger Direct for $99. Perhaps at least wait for a holiday sale, since most every place has sales at that time.

I went ahead and got the Pani BD65, Got it from Vann's for $118 w/free shipping. I sold my PS3 today to a buddy at work, it was just too darn loud when trying to watch a movie. My vaulted ceilings just amplified the fan noise. Im actually starting my room swap project next week, going from the dedicated HT to a media room/HT in my living area.

Congrats Stripes. I have the 60 not 65, but I had to leave/set it at quick start (or whatever it's called), to have acceptable turn on and load times. Dunno how it is with the 65.

The 65 does have a "quick start up" option that it says uses slightly more idle power, but it starts up in 1/3 the time of the BD60. It is also very quick to pick up where you left off on a previously played disc.
