Hey all, I was bout to pull the trigger on the 50" 1080p Samsung but then I got to thinking. My new "theater" area is part of a larger room with a bar, pool table etc. Hell the couch will be at least 10-12' away from the TV. So I was thinking, I will never be close enough to take advantage of the higher resolution. I figured I can take the same money and get the 720p 60" LG. Any suggestions? The firm I work at has one in the conference room but it is only used for presentations so no cable. I will bring in a box and see how awful SD cable looks on that huge screen but I just wanted to know if there are any other TV's at that size for similar price that I should consider. Thanks.

I would go with the 60'' at your viewing distance. I was almost in the same boat; my distance is 11.5 feet and the 50'' plasma was just too small; I couldnt justify spending the extra money to go from 50'' to 60'' so I threw a whole new idea in there and went with a 73'' DLP. I didnt like the fact that I was losing the "sexiness" of a flat panel but when it was all said and done; it was the best upgrade I have ever made in relationship to my HT. I own a plasma and LCD and to my surprise, the DLP has a better picture than both of them.

Great links. I could get a huge DLP but I have a very wide viewing angle so the Plasma was my best route. (LCD at that size would cost a leg or two). I think I will just be doing the LG 60". Thanks guys.

In the basement, with a bar, and a couch 12 feet away?

Sounds like you are thinking to small. I would go front projection and 110" at least!

Seriously, if you haven't given serious consideration to that route I would encourage you to do so.

Assuming you have the 5.1/7.1 setup already, then front projection won't likely cost you more than the plasma options you had.

I just don't like how 'dim' they are. I wish they were brighter. Maybe I am looking at the wrong units

PJ's are awesome but you have to have light control

I picked a 60pc1d up at Best Buy on a $1999 open box special today. Two movies into it, I am very happy so far.

Score...:p. The more I look at it, the more I realize that I would not be taking full advantage of 1080p because I would never be close to the screen. I also figured this when I bought my Toshiba HD-A20 player. I hear the 1080p is not all the spectacular so I could always set it back to 1080i and be done with it. I assume it is somewhere in the setting for the player menu. Thanks all.

Edit: Well what's the deal? I just looked on Circuit City's website and the 60" LG is no longer there. It was the cheapest around (like 2600). I hope they are not pulling it.

I don't think LG is in the rear projection tv market anymore. And at
60" sizes, you should be able to find a 1080p unit at around $2k from
many differrent manufacturers. the 720p units I've seen that are still being
made in the RPTV format are smaller than 50". Go to CC, BB, Sears, one of these will have a Toshiba, Mitsubishi, Sony, Samsung, etc at around the 60" size for $2k on sale.

The BB I got mine from was getting rid of their stock of 60pc1d's.

FWIW, I discovered today that the 60PC1D doesn't correctly do 1080i. The link below explains the issue. I used the test pattern disc from w6rz.net to determine this.

It's still a fine TV, but if you want to do 1080i, you don't want this one. It's kind of a bummer to find this out. Lesson learned.

My question is: what is the service/warranty and parts availability(out of warranty) for the LG units like?

Panasonic,Pioneer and Samsung have pretty good service/warranty and out of warranty parts available. I'm sure some other companies do as well --- but today -- far too many companies have horrid service/out of warranty parts availability.
