Have to admit that this is a bit of a guilty favorite of mine. I loved Tim Curry's performance as Darkness in this, and it is still one of the most amazing movie make-up effects ever done IMHO. This one was on sale so I picked it up needless to say. The PQ still suffers a bit, but it has always had some issues over the years and though it shows, I am glad they didn't try to scrub it clean because that is how it was. The PQ is definitely the best I've seen this film look.
Like the previous Ultimate DVD, this one includes both the Theatrical (US) release and the Director's Cut (European), with completely different scores. I only reviewed the US cut, as that is how I first saw it. The original score is cool, but the US version is a bit more entertaining with tracks by Yes and Bryan Ferry of Roxy Music.
The story is pretty standard fantasy fare, but it is the crazy characters, insane sets and visual effects and the fun performances that are the draw for this one. Fans will probably want to go ahead and pick this one up. All others, probably a rental first.
