LEDs, PhlatLight & Lampless Projectors

After returning from the 2008 CEDIA show, we can definitely say that LED-based front projectors will be coming to a home theater near you in the not-so-distant future.

Currently, front projectors that use DLP technology require an arc lamp, color wheel, and mechanical shutter to produce images. Lamps offer terrific brightness, but burn out after a couple of thousand hours or so, and need to be replaced. Replacement bulbs can run several hundred dollars. LEDs, on the other hand, offer a stable light output solution during the entire life of the projector. Whereas, arc lamps decrease in brightness over time because of fading (and become dimmer), LEDs offer a constant and consistent light source over time. And, unlike arc lamps, there is no mercury in LEDs so there’s no replacement hazard or stockpiling of hazardous materials in landfills. LEDs are also an energy-efficient and green technology.

I'm a big fan of this for the future, but it definitely is coming from some no-name unheard of brands at the moment. Who the heck is Delta? I mean, are we talking about a airline making projectors now? ;)

I think it is sad that the big manufacturers haven't jump on this technology and really tried to push it, at least for shows/prototype purposes over the last year. No doubt in my mind that if Optoma, Panasonic, Sharp, etc. had been demoing a LED prototype front projection system that it would have been of very significant interest to many people on many forums. But, brands that don't have actual product, don't seem to have websites, are unheard of, and simply touting their vaporware... It still seems like it is years away from being reality instead of science fiction.

Not that I'm not darn excited about it becoming reality ASAP.

Don't remember where I read this ( I think HT magazine), but Samsung is either developing or about to come out with front projectors with LED's as the light source. They already are on their 3rd gen rear projectors (I think 3rd) that use LED's, and they look pretty good from what I've seen.
