Does anyone know what would be a better buy, a plasma such as the Pioneer 55" or the Westinghouse 1080p LCD. I have the Westinghouse, but the Pioneer looked really nice as well. I havent noticed a lot of reviews on the plasmas such as the pioneer in particular. I have 30 days to change my mind about the 1080p lcd, but so far it looks really nice.

Generally speaking, plasmas typically look better and handle video better than their corresponding LCD models. Add to that, you get more plasma for the same money, or spend less for the same size plasma as the LCD models.

Plasma vs. LCD is debated and compared all over the place (including this site) and is worth reading about. But, everytime I read about LCD the bottom line ends up being that plasma looks better and costs less.

If you aren't a video game or PC nut who must have a static image up on screen for hours on end, then plasma is a great way to go. But, if burn-in is a very real possibility in your scenario, then think long and hard before switching from LCD to plasma.

As BMXTRIX says, you should look at previous discussions of this issue. If I were buying a new TV and if it would be either plasma or LCD, I would go with LCD. But read the discussions; don't just do what some random guy on the internet says he would do.

Yeah, I've tried to do my DD, but went ahead and bought the Westinghouse 1080p LCD. Now I dont know if the same criteria is valid in the debate regarding this particular tv. This tv was all by itself so I couldnt compare it to anything. They did have the lesser Westinghouse HD tv next to a Pioneer Plasma which the Pioneer was definitely better. So far this 1080p Tv is very, very nice.

the Westinghouse you got is 1920 x 1080 pixels right? I don't think you will get more than 1366 x 768 from plasma unless you spend a whole lot more money. I want a Westinghouse LVM-47w1 when they come out.

Yes, 1920 x 1080. One thing I noticed is that it supports that resolution in PC compatible, but for HDTV Compatibility it states up to 1080i. All this is quite new to me, so I'm not sure why it supports 1080p only in PC mode. HDMI state 1080i as well.

A few things I'll add I found in my search.
So called higher ended models you do get more Plasma size versus LCD's for money spent.
Mid Level to Budget its no longer true as much, the gap closed to a few dollars.

I've seen posted with DLP's and other projectors to add in all costs associated with the TV running, includes bulbs etc. Plasma's at even sizes to LCD's take twice the energy to run. LCD's on average use the same wattage as 6 inch and more smaller CRT's. CRT's per average use etc run about $18 a month in electrical, so that makes Plasma's at $36. Could be a factor for some, others moot, me it did when I went to this next arena.

My neighbor is a Plasma nut and tried to sway me that direction so I listened to what he had to say and read 1000's of posts and information topics. His 4 year old Plasma is showing dimming. They say they've corrected some of that problem so Plasma's now extend beyond 8 years life before there so dim you'd want another set. Hell I got a 6 year old LCD computer screen and a 3 year old one, neither has dimmed noticeably at all.

I dont think you can go wrong with Lcd,especially as the 60" sony sxrd is $3800 now! I was admiring it at C City just this afternoon.Jeez this tv is really tempting for the $$$,god only knows how good the 70 incher is going to be when it arrives.
BUT I was falling in LOVE with the picture of a 55inch Hitachi plasma hds52 (similar price) and I think plasma still "does it" for me.
