Here is a link that compares two tv's that I am thinking about purchasing. Which one do you guys suggest, does anyone have these particular models here?

http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/compare/compare.asp?comPage=catprodlist&page=1&catid=23524&sort=0&logon=&langid=EN

Basically, the main difference I can see is the Sharp LC46D64U has a better response time, while it has a lower contrast ratio and the Sony has a higher contrast ratio with a higher response time.

I will be using this tv for movies (bd and dvd), tv and gaming (ps3).

which one is the better of the two?
is it better to have a higher contrast ratio or lower response time (i know this might hurt a bit in gaming)

Personally, I would do the Panasonic TH50PX75U as it will outperform both in terms of black level, motion, and natural color palette. Not to mention you would save a few bucks as well.

If I HAD to do one or the other, I would do the Sony as it seems to have better black level performance.

Honestly the ONLY LCD sets I would even consider would be the Samsung 71 and 81 series. Even then, someone would probably have to have a gun to my head. For the price of one of those you could get a Pioneer plasma and have the best picture quality available.

I was comparing both today. The sony had casino royale playing on blu ray and the sharp one had bourne ultimatum playing on hd-dvd.

The sony one looked better to me, but i would've liked comparing the same movie rather than different ones.

All current LCDs have one problem or another (most of which are fairly minor unless you are a super videophile).

The Samsungs are not without their problems either. For what it's worth I think I am going to stick with Toshiba. I had the 52LX177 but returned it because I just wasn't sure. After seeing the Sharp in a friend's home and closely scrutinizing the Sony in stores, I still think the Toshiba is the best (for me)...but I am waiting for the newest model that should be available very shortly.

went today to the store and the sharp looked better. better colors, the salesman showed a new model they received, I forget the brand of the tv, it was an lg, toshiba or samsung, not sure, anyway, the contrast ratio on the new one was very high, like 25,000. right next to it was a 52" Sharp, the sharp looked much better.
But then again, it could be the settings on the tv and etc...

One thing is for sure, most stores that I go to always suggest the sharp over sony and samsung.

tough choices.

In your two choices the Sharp LC46D64U AQUOS is better.

You definitely have to qualify that statement. I saw a current 64U and the 'banding' problems that are being talked about are definitely still there. I haven't seen the Sony in a home setting but there have been issues reported with it too. They ALL have issues.

I second annunakis suggestion of the Panasonic PX75. It offers better picture quality than any of the LCD sets mentioned.

I dont beleive we have the Mitsubishi tv's here in Canada (well at least for Montreal)
The new Sharp's still have banding issues? Damn, I was told they're not supposed to anymore.

contact mitsu for you canadian retailers,

as for the sharp, mine still has the issue of banding. The suggestion of going to plasma, imo, is the best.the 50 768p elite kurro 2599 here in fl, and the 50 panny 1080p 2099. Ive been looking at the mitsu, and imho its got the best black levels on a lcd ive seen.

Just a quick reminder, the contrast ratios and response times these manufacturers post are a joke. They use different criteria to measure these between manufacturers and even within the same manufacturers they can change from year to year.

There are ways to measure both objectively, but no manufacturer I know of does this. Case in point, Tomshardware.com consistently finds different response times from the stated manufacturers claims on LCD computer monitors. The monitors they test go through a battery of scientific tests. I really am not aware of any home theater publication that tests LCD's similar to how Tomshardware.com does. If there are some out there, I'd be interested to read up on it. It would be very interesting to see how they stack up on the bench.
