I am in the process of buying a 50 inch LCD rear projection TV. I am trying to decide between the Sony Grand Wega and the Panasonic models. I am choosing between these two models due to a special deal I am getting from a local company. I have seen them both and to me they seem very similar. But I am not knowledgeable in this area so any assistance with suggestions would be appreciated. Also does anyone know of any differences between these two models both pros and cons. Thanks for your help - I really need it.

I was not very impressed with the Panasonic LCDs in my comparisons. So far it is the only LCD TV that I have witnessed the screen door effect on. I eliminated failrly early and focused on the Sony GW and Hitachi LCD. I settled on the Sony KDF-50WE655 and could not be happier. To my eyes, it had better colors and looks slightly more detailed although both were very very good. If you are able to, view the Panasonic and Sony side-by-side with the same source(s). Only your eyes can tell you which one you like better.

which is better

I sell both of those tv's and there is no comparison. The sony is much better. Have you considered DLP? Much more depth to the picture. MUCH better contrast. Same general overall dimensions. Same viewing angles. Same lamp time. To me the sony looks like a computer generated image whereas the DLP(particularly the Mits dlp) looks like you are looking through a window. To me there is no comparison and apparently Sound and vision magazine agrees with me because they rated the mits dlp the best tv of 2005.

I have the Sony KDF50WE655 if you can still find one get one, amazing clarity from HDMI and even Standard Cable, more and more channels are going HD though so it gets even better. It looks great and image is pefect. Make sure you watch the TV for a while, some TV's especially the JVC HD-ILA Tv's make me sick watching them, the edges warp as the image moves from scene to scene. I was at Best Buy watching the Sony and JVC 52" HD52BP6 side by side on same channel and they both had great color and looked great on their stand. But the warping on the edges was just making me dizzy!

I have the Panny 50" lcd projection model. I like it...with reservations...the bulb life. You need to check the bulb life and cost on both the Sony and the Panny.

There is no screen door effect on mine, nor my friend's Panny. The plus side for Panny....it's cheaper, and a big one for me...when viewed in a side by side comparison (as I did) the Panny has a vastly superior front screen that absolutely minimizes glare. The Sony looked like a mirror and reflections are terrible with it.

You should be happy with the purchase of either. By the way, the Panny's are getting cheap. Our little, rural membership store here in Oregon has the HDTV 'ready' 52" on sale for Christmas at $1488.

Happy tv hunting.

it actually hurts me to see those yellow things.
I am REALLY sorry that this has happened to you and many others.

I still like Sony's CRT displays for SD.

What video solution are you considering now?
