LCD/Plasma TV fan noise

I am beginning to find my Toshiba Regza LCD flat panel's fan noise unbearable. Almost for this reason alone, I am considering replacing it. Can someone recommend a 50 to 50" LCD or plasma in the $1.8K to $2.5K range that for sure does not have a cooling fan in it?

At the moment I am leaning towards the Panasonic plasma such as the TH-50PZ800 but not sure if it has a fan in it.

Thank you in advance.

I have the Panasonic TH-50PZ77U and I think it has a few fans in it but they seem to be very quiet. I can't imagine that they got rid of the fans nor can I imagine that they got louder ones.

I'm a bit of a nut job about things making noise.
The fridge drives me crazy and I would get rid of it but that's where we keep the food. :D

This is the first time I have heard a complaint about fan noise from any TV and have to wonder if there is a faulty condition that could be remedied.

My Panasonic TH-42PZ77u is completely silent and it has four fans in it. If your TV is making audible noise then I would have to say that there is something wrong with it. What kind of noise is it? Is it air rushing or does it sound like a rattling or squeaky fan?

Call Toshiba and complain. If they've had enough other complaints, they may have a fix but won't just make it public unless they put it on their website.

You can slow the fan down and that does make it more quiet. You'd need to set up a voltage divider and it only requires a couple of resistors. However, opening it to make modifications will probably void the warranty.

Also, not to mention lessen the airflow and open up components to overheating. Possible yes, but not recommended.

Is the fridge a Whirlpool? Mine sounds like a truck.
Nah, wish it was though. I actually put soundproof carpeting on the back of the freezer part to quiet down the fan. My friends would laugh but it works to a noticeable degree. :)

My panasonic plasma is a veritable oven. Even if the fans sounded like a launching space shuttle, I wouldn't dream of reducing the fan speed. I'm glad it's quiet. I got $10 that says PENG would never do that to a TV.
I think he's an electrical engineer. ;)

It doesn't take much of a speed reduction to make it more quiet but I also didn't mean that the speed should be halved, or anything like that.

I would guess that the noise is from trying to move a good amount of air through a group of tiny holes stamped or molded in the case.

Thank you guys. The fan noise I am having is just fan noise like you would find on HD DVD, BD players, or personal computers but just a little louder. It is not like a rattling or high pitch noise that can be expected from a defective fan. This thing is now about 3 years old so I am not going to bother complaining. I just want to buy another one and demote this one to somewhere else in the house.

I am considering the THPZ85 and the THPZ800. The Z85 is $500 less at Future Shop. On comparing the specs it seems like the only difference is on the audio side which I don't care but that's just a comparison provided by the Future Shop website. I cannot find anything about the Z85 on the Panasonic site so I am still wondering if it really has the same video performance as the Z800.

They are both here on this page:

http://www2.panasonic.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/vModelList?storeId=15001&catalogId=13401&catGroupId=75003&langId=-1&surfCategory=null&cacheProgram=11002&cachePartner=7000000000000005702&isSeo=true&orderBy=msrpalternate

I went to there home page and clicked on plasma and then had the list appear from lowest to highest.
I tried to link to the compared spec's but that didn't work.

Adam had a thread going about the differences in Panny plasmas:

I had my sister pick up her TH-50PZ85U from Newegg for $1500 delivered.
I know, I know ... Canada ... Maybe you could borrow Sheep's bank card. :D

My Panny is quieter than a church mouse - my DVR is actually louder than my TV. ;)

His card would have worked nicely a few months ago but not now when CD=0.78 USD. :D Good to know the Panny has quiet fans, thanks again.
