I just watched the movie "Last Night."
For a brief intro ganked from IMDB:
The story follows a married couple, apart for a night while the husband takes a business trip with a colleague to whom he's attracted. While he's resisting temptation, his wife encounters her past love.
...Okay, so, I wanted to place that there because right up front I will tell you this movie is not for everyone or any time/place.
Typically, with a tagline like that, I'd pass. But a friend recommended it to me, and I had a NetFlix cue to fill and a theater I'm literally addicted to: so, I watched it tonight.
I'll admit. I liked the movie. It's very real. I think anyone can find something about it to relate to. A feeling, a time, a wonder of a past love. Even if the story doesn't directly relate to your life (as it doesn't mine), you'll probably find aspects or emotions that have or do. A past love you occasionally wonder about while with your current, a wonder, maybe something more subtle.
Keira Knightley plays her roll wonderfully, and I really liked Griffin Dunne's performance (actually that's why I went on IMDB, to see who the actor was) even though the roll was pretty tiny (but he made it count!). Sam Worthington I thought was a bit dry, but, I'm a bit dry, so, I can't blame him - maybe it added to the believability (we all aren't DeNiro or something). The rest of the cast did well also.
The following may be considered a spoiler, but I would have wanted to know this going into the movie, so, I offer you the choice....
My main warning, and perhaps complaint, is this:
I found the movie emotionally draining, because I never saw a completely happy outcome, no matter what the result.
Nevertheless, I found it worth a rental - actually a highly recommended if your up to it, surely not worth a purchase - I just don't see rewatching it.
Movie: 8/10
Sound: 8/10 (Mostly dialog, a few words were a bit muffled, but generally clear - no demo stuff, no LFO, just dialog material, but for what it was intended to do, the soundtrack was very good - easy to understand and well mixed dialog and atmosphere)
Picture: 8/10 (I applauded the cinematography being very distant and in the background, I could have seen this movie being turned into a cheese fest by having overly stylized filming and everything shot overly artsy, the film is a bit desaturated for aesthetic, but other than that it just all blends - which is great for this kind of story. That said, the transfer was great and the blacks are crisp and I didn't see any real objections)
8/10 Overall. Worth a rental.
