laptop to receiver connection question

I tried connecting my laptop to me receiver using a mini headphone jack from the laptop headphone output to a stereo rca connector on my reciever aux input. I get a terrible ground hum, I tried a different connecting cord but got the same result. Any idea of why this is happening or other connection options?

Is it a Dell?

I have heard that this is a serious issue with the headphone jack with Dell machines and have had it myself. I have also heard that you should turn off the INPUT jacks and all input options on the Dell to help to alleviate this, though I have never tried it myself.

YES! I know exactly the problem. I get ground loop issues when plugging in my laptop to my receiver's aux jack when the laptop is plugged into the wall outlet. Now, you can always get rid of it by either A) Running the laptop on the battery or B) Buy a cheap adapter that gets rid of the ground prong of the laptop's plug. I wouldn't recommend doing the latter as you'd be vulnerable to laptop damage.

In another forum I read this, dont get it really

"You could start by connecting the chassis of the computer to the chassis ground of the receiver. If that doesn't work, it become much more of a crap shoot."

I ended up connecting to the CD Inputs. No probs just some hiss.

I also compared to quality on IPOD connect to receiver. Flipped back and forth, almost identical

Anyone on hiss riding?

For high quality playback . . .

You should consider adding a USB sound card that includes an optical or coax digital audio output for connection to the receiver.
Also, store the files on the PC in a lossless format like FLAC, or higher res MP3 files. This configuration is capable of much better quality then the iPod.

Another option would be the squeezebox 2/3 which includes high quality D/A converters for a good analog or digital connection to the receiver.
