“We have such dark and long winters,” is the reason given for the weird knitting activity. After spending some time in Maine I've seen people not right in the head , presumably from the cold and isolation. I haven't seen anybody resort to public knitting though. Maniacs seem to be somewhat more conformist than Herring Munchers.
