Years ago I had generic five way speakers with 15inch woofers.....I liked them...but ended up moving and replaced them with Klipsch KLF10.....To me the klipsch always seemed to lack midrange and are a little harsh...I was thinking of replacing them with Cerwin Vegas XLS-215.....any thoughts.
Thanks. Joe

I have listened to the Klipsch KLF series for many years and lacking mids was not what we experienced.. they lacked Bass. I assume you have used tone controls/Eq to adjust the the harsh horn sound that some dislike. Did you purchase the KLF-10 new and they sounded this way? If not my guess the speakers networks or the mid horn diaphram needs to be checked. Sorry I have not listened the CW speakers you posted so I am no help on that one. Oh welcome to the forum Joe :)

Thanks for the replies...I have more info. My receiver is a vintage Pioneer SX-1080. I am the original owner and it's still working good. Years ago I had BSR 5 way speakers (DR1550) with a 15 woofer. The Klipsch KLF 10 were purchased new. They are good but I liked the BSR's better. Thats why I am thinking of the CV 215xls. Will the 1080 with 120 watts per channel be suffecient for the CV's?

Thanks ,

Joe

From everything I've read, the KLF-20 and KLF-30 are much preferred to the KLF-10s. I finally found some KLF-20s on Craigslist about 8 months ago and picked them up in great condition for $400. I don't really notice any harshness at high levels, especially not in the upper ranges. The horn tweeter is accurate, clear, and not overpowering in the slightest like some people seem to think of Klipsch. I just did some high level listening last week, though I honestly couldn't tell you what SPL it was at. I find it harder to tell with my Klipsch speakers since they can handle quite a bit of power without distorting or sounding very fatiguing to me.

I used a Behringer EP2500 with signal coming from my Yamaha DSP-A1, and the Behringer certainly has no shortage of power, especially considering the 100db/w efficiency of the speakers. Though I think I have read that some suggest damping the mid-range horn on the 20s and 30s, the KLF-10 might have the same horn.

Here's a video I took last week; the microphone distorted pretty badly at these levels but I noticed not audible distortion from the speakers themselves. I was hesitant to throw more power at them only because I don't have a subwoofer connected at the moment and I'm not sure how much excursion the woofers are capable of.

I own a pair of XLS 28's and I'm extremely happy with them. Everything I listen to sounds new again! Very clear, not scratchy, lot of bass. They even sound great loud. Running them with a Pioneer vsx 1022, and it actually runs them perfectly. Never tends to overheat or shut off my receiver. I honestly can't say anything bad about them!! I've owned them new for 2 months now and I'm still in love!!
