klipsch and Axiom

I know what the klipsch F3 sound like and to me for what I know, they sound pretty good. Reading all of the posts on this forum I'm getting the impression that, they are not recommended as much as some other speakers. Any klipsch speaker for that matter. That being said I'm starting to shift gears a little and look at some of the brands that mail you the speakers, which brings me to axiom M80. Know I guess by reading, that they sound good, but could someone compare them to klipsch for me? Are they that much better? They don't cost that much more. Any info would be great, thanks....JOhn

John, from what I can tell, some people just don't prefer the sound of Klipsch. If you like them, that's all that matters, IMO. I'm not against checking out other brands, though! I'd suggest trying out as many as you can (or have the patience to do) to see what you like the best.

I can't compare them, but I do have a tidbit regarding Klipsch. They sounded ok to me, maybe a bit bright, but I had one tweeter and two sub amps go out on my Klipsch system in 2 years (with no abuse I promise, I take care of my toys), which is why I sold the brand new warranty replacements on eBay and bought my Paradigm On Wall Monitors, which are bit harsh after a while, but when I heard them for a short period of time I didn't notice this. I want (but cannot buy quite yet) Paradigm Studios, which I have listened to for long periods of time and really like. My dad has had two iterations of Paradigm gear in his system as well. Anyway, the point is, I think quality control on Paradigm stuff is superior to Klipsch due to my experiences, so give them a listen too. Maybe I sound like a fanboy, but all my dealer sells is Paradigm and Sony, and my next purchase will certainly include a broader range of auditions to confirm (or not) my desire for the Studios...

Thank you for your inputs, I will listen to the paradym, they too get much praise on this forum, I live in the syracuse area and we do have a pretty big dealer here. The last thing I want to do is to rush getting speakers. In this economy all I'm going to do is take my time. Thanks again

For a rough comparison of Klipsch to Axiom, give a listen to something in the Studio line from Paradigm. I found them to very similar to Axiom speakers.

Do you have a dedicated amp? If not, I might look at the Axiom M60s instead of the M80s. The M80s are a 4 ohm load and the M60s are 8 ohm. 4 ohm loads are tough on standard A/V receivers. A normal receiver should have no problem driving the M60s or the klipsch (they are very efficient). As an owner of the M60s and previously, the klipsch RF-63 my vote would go towards the axiom. I sold my klipsch for the axiom and haven't had any regrets, only extreme satisfaction

Axioms have a better overall balance IMO. The midrange on Axioms win out against just about every Klipsch I've heard. Klipschs have the edge when it comes to dynamics. The Axioms aren't slouches in this area either mind you.

Klipsch sounds "bright" because they're supposed to, no dim & dead like most cone & ribbon tweetered speakers. That's my bias. However, listen to everything with the speaker grills ON so as to not become influenced by design, if you can. I have a pair of Coral BX-201's that are bright & efficient and the tweeters are cones.

Nonesense! Any Dennon, Sherwood Newcastle, HK, higher end Onkyo (806/906), Higher end Yamaha etc. will do just fine.

I am currently using a Denon 2309 with a pair of M80's and giving them a pretty good workout with Zero problems and the 2309 is only middle of the road, if that. I also called Denon tech support a while ago and stated that Denons should have no problem handling a 4ohm load.

I don't like the sound of either one myself. Everybody has different ears and opinions about speakers. I would suggest going and listening to as many brands as you can, you could see if any members near you have the Axioms as they are an internet company only. I am not sure of their return policy though.....

While I do like the Axiom speakers I agree that you should go out and listen to as many brands as you can. Then report back what you liked and didn’t like so others can better help you select speakers you might like the sound of to demo in your home.

In the “Hearing Things” sub-forum at the Axiom forum the first post list people willing to demo their systems. If no one is listed in your area call or email Axiom to see if they know of anyone who’s not listed. Klipsch may have the same thing but I’m not sure.

Also as Fred and Bob say many receivers have no problem running the M80s. I’m using a Denon 2807 to run 3xM80s and 4xQS8s with no problems.

But again you really should go out and listen to a wide range of speakers unless you already know what type of sound you like.

My Sherwood Newcastle is only rated to drive an 8 ohm load. It's an R-925.

Denon is technically rated for 8ohm also. I spoke with Denon Tech Support and they saw no reason why I would have a problem running a 4 ohm load. Besides the fact that there are so many using Denon receivers without complaint.

Can't tell you about Sherwood Newcastle other than to suggest calling their Tech Support.

My Sherwood Newcastle is only rated to drive an 8 ohm load. It's an R-925.

Axiom sells Sherwood Newcastle at their online store and have bench tested certain Sherwood Newcastle products. You can call them toll free and ask them about the R-925 driving a 4ohm load such as the M80's.

My plane old Sherwood drives my M80s just fine up to 100db (I don't like to listen louder than that).

It is also technically rated for 8Ohms.

Funny you should mention Denon Bob. I was looking at spec sheets for the 3808 last night and they give power output for 8, 6 and 4Ohm loads for a receiver only rated for 8Ohm speakers. As far as I know, its a legal liability thing.

When I bought it I didn't expect it to only be meant for 8 ohm speakers. I believe it even says on the back only to connect an 8 ohm load or something like that but I would have to check. I have been using it with my KG.4's which are 6 ohm and I haven't had any trouble. I got the receiver for $50 bucks so it wouldn't be a big loss if for some reason it got damaged. I was more worried about the speakers. I love my old KG.4's!
