KLH subwoofer problem

I'm having trouble with my KLH subwoofer. It worked perfecty fine for 5+ years with my Sony receiver. Since I moved into a new apartment I cannot get the darn thing to "hit" like it used to. All I get out of it now is a distorted low hum whenever a "hit" should take place. I've tried using different subwoofer cables, using different wall outlets, even had the woofer tested at a repair shop. I hook it up by using the mono port on the sub connected to the audio out subwoofer port on the receiver. I've reset all the settings on the receiver and changed setup options to everything possible with no results. The best I can describe the noise coming from it is that the sub wants to hit where it should, but just can't. If I had my guess it would be some sort of grounding issue, but I'm stupid with electronics! Any suggestions???

Is the room you have put the sub into substantially larger than the one you took it out of?

My guess is that the subwoofer could be placed directly in a null for frequency response in your room, or the room is just too big for the sub to fill adequately.

When the driver was removed from the cabinet it was not wired in reverse polarity by accident was it?

The room is pretty close to the same size. All the connections are exactly the same the Sony receiver manual suggests, which are the connections when it worked at my house and then my apartment. The only variable that has changed is the location; my new apartment.

Try placing the sub in different locations throughout the room. First, put the sub in the listening location. Play some bassy music or something through it. Crawl around on your hands and knees with you ear 6"-10" off the floor. Listen to where the bass sounds best. When you find that spot, mark it and put the sub there. It should yield the best response for the room.

Are there any phase switches on the back of the sub?

Are the ceilings a bit higher in the new room than the old one?

What size subwoofer is it and what are the dimensions of the room H x W x D?

The problem is I cant get a bass sound whatsoever. I can get a really small amount when playing music, but the hum of the woofer is greater than the actual bass sound. The overall sound is similar to having a static channel on tv with the sub attempting to make sound where it normally should make sound, but the "static" is louder. A slight popping here or there can be heard as well.

The sub is a 10inch KLH amplified subwoofer system. Freq resp: 30 to 40-180 Hz. Amplifier power is 100 Watts. The receiver is a Sony STR-DE485.

Room size is approx: 18'x12'x8'

So the sub is humming? You did not mention that before did you? If it is humming try it in a different outlet. Ideally the same outlet as the receiver. Also check the subwoofer cables and ensure they are in good order.

It soundslike there is a problem with the sub's amplifier perhaps?

I've tried every outlet in the living room. I had the sub tested over a week at a local repair shop, everything checked out just fine. I tried using a brand new subwoofer cable, received the same results. Its so hard to describe without having someone in my living room listening!

Did the repair shop test each component individually? Did they remove the woofer from the cabinet and test it out? Did they bench test the amplifer with an oscilliscope?
