Hello all, my wife and I are going to Florida in May. ( west coast, Sanibel Island / Ft Meyers area)
We have the opportunity to take a 3-1/2 hr ferry ride to Key West.
Has anyone been there, and do you think it's worth a 7 hr round trip?

Thanks,
Rick

I go to Key West fairly often, because I live in Miami and its just a quick trip in a boat down there. Driving isn't too bad either, you could stop at Gilberts for lunch and a beer, its the first stop really in the keys there is a little outdoor bar and a few tables by the dock. Burgers and conch fritters are pretty good. Just don't go down on a Friday afternoon or back on a Sunday, because the traffic will kill you. On a ferry it will be pretty easy, I even think I know the ferry you are talking about taking.

Make sure to eat some hogfish while your down there (its a local snapper, flakey white fish, very very good).

Key West is a drunkfest though, just to warn you ahead of time. People fish during the day, and then get bombed at night/afternoon. If they aren't bombed, they are stoned. It's a fun place to go, but, if your looking for a more calm experience its not always the best. If you want to relax, grab a few brews and cruise around, its a good time. The hotels are kind of dumpy, even the "nice" ones, but, that's just the keys.

Yes, and if it's better than we expect, maybe another.
The 7 hr round trip is the main sticking point.
Along with the fact that I'll have a rental car sitting back at the Ft Meyers dock, unused for two days.

I think the trip is worth it if the company is right. I wouldn't go back to go back but wouldn't hesitate if it meant I could hang out with good people. If it was just with the wife?: I would rather work on my car. I get enough of her at home. :D

The other alternative was to go up and visit you in R.I. (Instead of FL)
I'll help you work on the car.:D

Come on up.
Now that I have a laptop we could reply to each other's threads from the same room. :)
At first that sounds good.
Though, I'd be afraid of making fun of you while you were in the same room.;)

Hey Rickster,

Listen to MidnightSensi, he knows what he's talking about. I'd say it's definatly worth the boat trip if you're staying overnight. If you were just going for the day, I'd say skip it.

Have you looked into flights? It's not much more than the boat and travel time is only 35-40 minutes. Just something to consider.

Oh, and if you want to hook up for a beer or ten while you're here, hit me up. I own a little bar down here on Marco Island about 45 minutes south of where you'll be.

Hi Keith, I just may take you up on that.:)
We've never been to Marco Island; friends say it's very nice.
I know you sent me the link to your place, I'll look for it.

Thanks,
Rick

If the weather is still nice, try some kyaking in the everglades.

Key West is nice for a night but nothing really gets going till the after hours. The historical sites are also cool but imo not worth the 7 hr roundtrip. Just drive east and come play with us , just over an hour comming and going. :)

I shouldn't laugh. I got off easy on that score more than once and am completely humbled by my good fortune. I wish you the same. ;)

If you'd like to meet up on Marco Island at (nowslappy) Keith's place, that might work? Or some half way point.
I can get to Marco Is. in under an hour.

I think Col. John "Hannibal" Smith said it best...
