I second that...
The first receiver I purchased was a Kenwood. I had no idea what I was doing, and like you, I seemed to remember that at one time I had heard that Kenwood made solid audio equipment. I don't remember the model number, but it set me back about $300.
It wasn't terrible, but as MarkW said, you could do much better for the money. I remember one of my friends bought an Onkyo (I don't remember the model number of this one either) for around the same price, and it performed substantially better than my Kenwood.
If you know your budget, just take a trip to a local audio boutique and see what they can set you up with for what you're willing to spend. Odds are that you will be much happier taking this route than buying a Kenwood.
