I currenty own a Kenwood KR-V7040 it is a good old 1992 Pro logic receiver, one of their best at the time, but I notice when I really want to rock, it cannot keep up. It tends to go into the protect mode. I do have the impedence matched correctly and do not drive the unit to the point of distortion or anything, but I think it just cannot keep up with my AR's. They have a good 91db sensitivity rating and 115wpc RMS, but My main question is "Will i gain much if I was to go with one of denon's stereo receivers? I can sacrifice the surround sound for sound quality. Will this be much of an improvement? thanks for any replies. -audioman

You will always gain something by getting more, clean power, whether it's Denon or something else. Good clean power costs money. If it's possible(if your Kenwwod has pre-outs) you may want to check into just getting an amp to add to your system. If 2-channel stereo is all you're after, why by another receiver if you can just add the power?

Most anything should be able to keep up with speakers that have a 91db efficiency rating. Aside from power, (newer/better/cleaner) circuitry and features alone should merit the upgrade. There are tons of newer sound formats that you are missing out on. You can't go wrong with denon or yamaha.

If this is just for 2-channel listening, then a newer denon should be "better" all around also. The immediate improvement may or may not knock your socks off, but over time your ears will gradually begin to thank you.

best,

Thanks for the input, my next question would be: I fi go with a denon 50wpc unit, do you think that the 100wpc kenwood will be more powerfull or will the high current amp ake up for the lack of power concening ratings? I was once told that onkyo, yamaha, denon,hk use a high current amp tech. that will make 50wpc sound like alot more. is this true?

Yes, this is true.
From what I have read about Kenwoods (I have read a lot),
they sacrifice discrete power (bigger bucks) for features, so that cost stays low.
Kenwoods burn up.
