Interesting news. I could see a decline in this company starting back in the mid 90's. Its a shame. This was the company that started my fascination with audio equipment and at one time made some top flight gear. See Article - http://www.avrev.com/news/0305/25.kenwood.html

It's a shame.

I have to agree with you, they've lost alot of market share like you said starting back in the 90s.

They were really good innovators.

I remember back in '93-95 going over to my buddy's house and and showing off his new Kenwood receiver. One of the coolest things about it was the fact that if you lost power to the unit, you could restore all the settings back from the remote thanks to its advanced bidirectional features. If memory serves me well, it was also RF based which was capable of changing settings without line of sight, including from another room as well (not like infrared).

I bought a Kenwood Pro logic receiver second hand from my brother in law back in '98 and still works awesome for 2 channel stereo.

IMO, i think it was more a matter of marketing pressure from the other consumer retail brands. I don't consider Kenwood any worse than JVC, Sony and etc...

Time stands still for no one I guess....

That's sad. I remember when the Kenwood name stood for quality hifi components.

Now this.

Wonder if I can pick up their stuff for cheap now. ;)

I started with one of the first Dolby Surround decoders which was its own componet back in 86. I also had one of Kenwoods amps from the BASIC series which was quite stout.

No major loss. All I remember about Kenwood working in an electronics repair shop during the late 80's-early 90's was that of all the brands out there, their's were in the shop the most. Both home and car products were very unreliable. I can't comment on their products in the 70's.
