Hi all,

I am a newbie here from India. Building a new 5.1 HT set up. Thought I will get myself a couple of nice floor standers to start with alongwith a sub for a 2.1 setup till.

Have shortlisted the Yamaha RX - V863 along with the Definitive Tech sub - 1000.

speakers I have shortlisted are:

KEF iq90, Quad 22L and B&W 684.

My problem is that retailers do not have these under one roof alongwith my choice of AVR. So I am kinda hoping the learned and the experience folks will help me make a choice as I go around auditioning these on different AVR's.

Also please suggest what surrounds and center channel I can use to get a complete 5.1 setup.

Room size 14ft x 20 ft; Preference Movies / DTH - 70%; Music 30%.

Thanks in anticipation for your valued comments

KEFs are unique because they use coaxial drivers. If I where choosing they would likely be my choice because I love coaxials.

B&Ws are known to have excellent cabinet construction quality making them truly very neutral

Quad's I'm less familiar with but theya re excellent quality as well.

If you're looking to turn this into a nice surround system KEF makes excellent satellite type speakers. The best I've ever heard. They would be a perfect match for the iQ90s. You might also look for deals on the iQ9s. I believe listening is helpful, but be careful of the room and setup.

Don't worry about the receiver too much. In direct stereo mode you shouldn't be able to tell the difference between receivers. And certianly not enough to change your choice of speakers.

If your going to use a sub with these take that into consideration.

I would suggest an iQ5 for a subbed system because it has a better midrange, is cheaper, smaller. Use a iQ6 for the center channel and a pair of KEF iQ8s for the surrounds or KEF 3001.2s and you will have a really sweet system.

You’re going to spend extra $ on the current line of any brand. Getting something a generation old can still deliver great sound, and save you some $. Personally, I have the KEF IQ7 & IQ8DS and enjoy the sound for both movies and music.

Accessories4less, vanns & onecall might be good places for the older KEF speakers. As for a sub, any good brand will do just fine.

In India, I have no idea. Maybe you could hire out a builder for the subs. If so give them the Kappa Perfect Mid VQ plans.

If your just wanting commercial. Look for JL Audio, SVS, HSU, and Epik dealers.

Sorry, missed the part about you being in India  Man, I have no idea where to tell you - is there a used market, or even E-bay where you are?

narrowed the choice

Guys thanks for ur time, auditioned the KEfs iq9 (found them) and the i q90. found the iQ 9's more subtel to the ear. Overal iQ 9s sounded better. The 90s had a bigger bass (is it technically correct to say that).

The store i went to also suggested to come back and try the Focal Chorus 816V.

More or less decided on the KEF iQ 9s just need to check out the quads to cross them of my list.

Listened to the B&W 684s as well - not to my liking.

Getting the final audition done on 18th.

Will keep u guys posted here

Thanks a lot
