Keep the old reciever or buy new one.

I'm finally setting up my room with my AV reciever (Yamaha RX-V657) and I'm wondering if I should upgrade to a Yamaha RX-A750 or RX-A740 (Aventage series) because it uses HDMI which mine does not. I didn't know about HDMI can pass higher resolution formats like Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD Master Audio. I am using Polk audio RTi series speakers in a 7.1 set-up. To me, I have plenty of power (95 watts per channel) and it seems like the new Yamaha RX-V recievers don't have the same amp specs anymore.

Like you mentioned, HDMI is needed from the BluRay Player to the receiver to enjoy HD audio. No way around it.

If you want future proof receiver (HDMI 2.0 and HDCP 2.2) you'll need to pick a higher end receiver. These specs will not be an issue until 4K sources and media becomes commonplace. It'll probably be a couple of years before it becomes a limiting need. Further, IMO, the Dolby Atmos and DTS:X are not worth ponying up the extra cash. Pick a last gen receiver and enjoy it for a couple or three years.

If you don't mind refurb, these offer tremendous value,

I'm not a fan of those new formats either. I do like those refurb prices though. Thanks

Bingo! And sooo much easier. One cable from AVR to BDP, one from AVR to TV, one from AVR to Cable/SAT box. Easy Peazy.

To enjoy true discrete 7.1 surround sound you must have all of these
a) BD player w/hdmi 1.3+ out
b) HDMI 1.3+ compatible 7.1 receiver
c) and finally a BD disk with 7.1 surround track

Everything else is not real 7.1

I didn't mentioned d) 7.1 speakers - which already have :)

When I purchased my Yamaha 7.1 receiver, I was under the impression that it would play 7.1 discrete. It didn't come with me HDMI back then only optical audio which I'm using now.

I have an older Yamaha with an OPPO player that does the decoding for me.. It's hooked up using the discreet analog connections in the back of the Yamaha for outboard processors.. This is the way you can get Dolby True HD and DTS Master HD when your receiver does not have HDMI.. You use six analog cables.. That's also easy..Check your manual to see if you have the rca connections in the back..

Technically, yes for 7.1, but reciever can't really do much with it. Also hd audio codecs are not really reaching the receiver ether.
Oppo is an exception to the rule, most bd players lack surround analog out

This is a perfectly acceptable way to get HD audio. Preferably, you are not doing any processing in the receiver (Pure Direct mode) to keep the D-A conversion in Oppo. If you do bass management or EQ in the receiver, it will first do a A-D apply processing and then D-A again. This second A-D-A can be avoided using HDMI.
