Kappa perfect vs sealed 24" cube Maelstrom X?

The subs I am talking about are at that DIYcable website the 18" sub was supposed to be good in a sealed 24" cube... I am not sure about the 21" sub but maybe a 24" cube would work too.

I doubt you are running out of driver. Sounds like you are running out of amp. The Kappa could easily take 2 or 3 times the amp...

Your enclosure could also be at fault. Exactly what model Kappa are you using? Check out the Kappa Perfect VQ build thread here. Has 120dB of output at 20Hz (we are talking clean sound here).

Cmon'! Details man!:D

I would have to side with jinjuku. I have 600 watts going to my Kappa 12VQ from a Peavey pro-audio amp and that sub is clean as can be, even when I'm cranking it.

I would still be interested in a side by side of a large 18" driver sealed vs. a highly capable 12" vented design.

My speculation would be that you would need considerably more power going into the 18" to add EQ to the low end so that it rivals the output of the Kappa midQ design below <30 Hz. Above 30 Hz...I've read good things about the smooth upper bass the maelstrom has but have never listened to one. The Kappa VQ has an effortless, smooth sound all around so it would definitley be a toss up.

I would say the problem is your amp is distorting not the sub, as the others have mentioned. The only time i can hear any type of stress or distortion/mechanical limits is when i play really low freq stuff at very high levels... Levels high enough to get the clip lights going on my amps... That are rated at 1400 watts into the load they are driving... I am not getting that kind of power output because my electrical circuits cant handle that kind of load without voltage sags but im sure its still substantially more than the o audio amp is putting out.

I believe the OP is using the 12.1 Sub. But if you are running your highpass filter too low then you will have issues. Make sure you got it at 20hz.

Why not build a ported maelstrom?:D

Nope subsonic is set at 25hz since you can't really hear below 30hz so get a transducer if you want to feel it?! And yes I am using the VQ. Try the High q setting of the kappa perfect in a 24" cube and you may be blown away.... or maybe try Audiobahn AW151T??????!!!!!! For $100 good luck beating that sub with 500 watts... actually its not possible.... yet!

Oh ya... and about the ported Maelstrom.. it would sound like crap compared to what I have for a diy anyway.

Sealed good... ported bad. Compare the audiopulse 15" to the audiobahn 15"... man I crack myself up!!!

If you want the loudest go with JBL 1500GTi or 1800GTi old school subs but the surround on them sucks. I had a pair of 15"s in a 5ft3 (total) particle board box that some joker made for me for like $5 g's and it was crazy loud.
