JVC RX-1028VBK Dolby Digital - Optical Ins Not Working

I just got an LG HDTV and it only has one audio output and it's optical. my receiver is fairly old (c. 2000) but it has 3 optical inputs all are assignable as well. problem is, i run an optical cable from the tv to the opt-inputs on the receiver and i get nothing. there's a button on the front of the receiver that says input analog/digital and i get no result either - no indication that that button is even doing anything...

any ideas? i'm happy to elaborate if this description is not clear or complete enough...

i don't think there are output settings (like a toggle on off...)

LG model 47LH40

you can check it out on the lg web site (lge dot com - sorry i couldn't post a link - too new of a newbie)

I looked at the manual real quick, and it might require you to turn off your tv speakers to enable to optical out. not 100% sure though. Its page 87 in the manual (how to turn tv speakers off). Do you have something else with optical out that you can try plugging into the receiver?

so you think i can only output from the tv speakers OR thru the optical (not both at the same time)? that kind of stinks. my old toshiba tube tv had a regular rca output that was fully independent of the tv speakers...

i'll give it a try...

Its pretty much a random guess, but it may work. I would also keep looking through the on screen menus for an optical out toggle. If it doesn't work, I would try and contact LG support and see what they say. Try and find something else to test the optical in on the receiver too, because it could be either piece of equipment.

Hopefully someone else can chime in who has more knowledge on the matter.

yeah - turning off the speakers on the tv menu had no new effect - i tried the various optical/coax digital settings and nothing new. i'll give LG support a try...

and if anyone else has any ideas, i'd love to hear 'em. i'm also considering buying an optical to analog converter so i can turn that optical signal into an analog/rca based stereo sig.

$100-$130 later, i probably would have bought a different TV had i known the output limitations... otherwise i love it...

Hi, Pat. I have some questions:
  • You say that the optical inputs are assignable on your receiver, but did you assign the one that you are using?
  • Have you tried more than one optical input, to see if one just isn't functioning?
  • Have you tried more than one optical cable?
  • Did you take the little plastic end caps off of the optical cable connectors? That's not meant to sound patronizing - it happens more often than you might think.

number 1 is the coax input but it has both optical and coax jacks on the back. i tried that one, tried the assignment, no luck

number 2, 3 and 4 are optical only. tried the 2nd jack, tried the 6 different combos of assignments but no luck there either.

Have you tried more than one optical input, to see if one just isn't functioning?

i tried 1 and 2, will try the other(s) later...

Have you tried more than one optical cable?

no - just bought the one from radioshack a few days ago.

:) yes i got that part right. i thought of that when i unpacked the cable - wish i knew where those little clear nubbies were now in case i'm just outa luck and have to return the cable...

i think its the receiver - i just chatted with LG's support and they say that the output and the tv speakers will work simultaneously but may not synch exactly so that's why they give you the option to turn the tv speakers off.

i'm looking into jvc support now to maybe get someone there to walk me thru the process - wish they had the live chat feature on their site like lg has...

pretty sure its some kind of limitation of the receiver. my cable box has an optical out too. tried running direct out of the cable box into the receiver - no good result there either... anyone know a good 800 number for JVC?

I don't know an 800 number, but you can send them an e-mail from the link here (which you may have already seen).
