No lies detected. When you live next door to a country with an economy 12-times larger that also refuses to convert to the metric system, it becomes impossible for us to stop measuring stuff by the width of a man's thumb*. A gallon of gasoline is still 4.55 litres though.

Invasions during the American revolution and the War of 1812 and the Fenian raids following the US Civil War precipitated the unification of the Canadian colonies into a single country. Then, there was "War Plan Red" from the 1920's/30's.
So, whether it is meant to be a joke, or not, maybe you'll understand why we find it crass and boorish, rather than funny. But, if you find it funny, go ahead and yuk it up. Just be aware that pissing off Canada, Denmark/Greenland, Panama, the UK and Germany just plays into Chinese and Russian hands.

WRT refusing to convert to Metric- it has crept in, but I'm not even sure schools teach it, aside from some science classes and anyone who has spoken to most Americans knows they didn't do well in those. Have you seen Jay Leno's old segment where he asked people simple questions, to find out what they don't know, but should? It's embarrassing and sometimes, pathetic. It's very disappointing that people are so resistant to new concepts.
I know people near my age who don't know the Metric System, so I have to assume they completely forgot, or the schools had a choice to teach/not teach/teach some, but not all. Our 7th grade science class taught us Metric, but I don't know if the rest of the school was required to learn it. This was 1970, so it would have been at the time it was being attempted.
However, many non-metric units are still used in England but the difference- they know more than one system and here, many people can't count change.

While I agree, metric makes far more sense than ole SAE English measurements, even in Canada the railroads still go by miles not kilometers.

Did you listen to Rubio’s opening statement this morning on China or any of his further answers during the confirmation hearing? Pretty sure everyone in NATO will be getting on board with the next administration’s foreign policy regarding China.
Trump is ruffling feathers which as I’ve said before is a common but outdated negotiating tactic. He’s not going to change so people should just grow accustomed to it. Conversely ranting, raving and making the conversation about his style strengthens this negotiating tactic by ignoring what he’s really trying to accomplish.
I sold cars for decades and this was the most prevalent tactic in the past and it’s very effective. The only reason it’s not as prevalent is due to manufacturers emphasis on customer satisfaction ratings. Trump doesn’t give a rip if his opponents don’t like him

I made a point of searching for Rubio's comments regarding China and I don't have any argument. However, that doesn't do anything to mitigate the stance being taken against allies. And, again, that plays into Beijing's and Moscow's hands.
Sales relationships between sellers and customers is related to - but not the same as - trade deals between/amongst countries. His bombast may be intended to deflect from what he really wants, but his "opponents" also have options. I'm convinced that he wants tariffs, because he wants tariffs. It has little or nothing to do with migrants, narcotics or trade deficits. It's astonishing that he has such a parochial understanding of international trade.

Many people may be ranting about his raving, but in the end, it won't be those people doing the negotiating. He behaved in a similar manner during his last term and it didn't gain him much. He is dialing up the rhetoric this time - I can only guess that he believes being more obnoxious will gain him more. The jury is out on that.
If he implements tariffs as threatened, be prepared for stormy weather, as there will be retaliation.

My point is his negotiating tactic is a distraction. If I/he can get you focused on one aspect of the deal you’ll be distracted from the rest. I guess if you don’t have experience in this negotiation tactic me explaining it is pointless. I watched him last time he was in office and laughed as the media and America railed at what he was saying while he was passing legislation that was completely ignored. He’s using a different boogie man this time but goal is the same, distract people from what he’s really doing by getting you emotionally invested in the distraction. Anyway you’re going to respond by addressing the distraction… carry on

I am aware that much of what he says is a distraction. I alluded to that when I said, "His bombast may be intended to deflect from what he really wants". Do you really think he is a master negotiator? When NAFTA was renegotiated during his last term, his antics got him very little. He raved about the new name - USMCA - in part to cover up the fact that he gained very little.
Lacking any ability to learn from his mistakes, he appears to be going with the same playbook as last time. I guess he hopes the extra-crazy rhetoric will work better.
There's a reason that Trump utterly loathes Chrystia Freeland. She put on a master class in dealing with Lighthizer the last time we went through this. She rope-a-doped until she wore his team down and they ended up agreeing to much less than they initially demanded. It doesn't help that they view international trade as a zero-sum game - "we have to win something and we don't consider it a win unless you lose something". It also didn't help that they were stymied by a 5' 3" woman.

Whatever domestic legislation he managed to get passed while rambling about other nonsense is little consequence when it comes to international affairs. Make no mistake, the distraction is partially aimed at Americans, as he won't be able to magically lower grocery prices - one of the main planks of his election campaign. It's a classic tactic of autocrats - blame problems on "outsiders".
If you think his ridiculous rants directed at allies and trading partners are just distractions that are of no consequence, you're deluding yourself. Burning up diplomatic capital does have consequences. If you want to continue thinking otherwise...carry on.
