I understand that I will not receive superior sound, but I wanted to see if you could give me a honest, down-to-earth answer.

Well basically, I have always had the "old school" pioneer stereo amplifier, you know the old square box, about 125wXchannel (2 channel). So when I had the opportunity, years back I purchased a pair of great floor speakers. There quality of sound and appearance, has given years of enjoyment. But now, I'm looking to "upgrade" to a 5.1 system, but utilize these speakers. Also being unemployed at the time, means I'm looking for Cheap stuff, and I mean CHEAP...I have always believed in buying component systems, so in case one part of the overall system fails, I'm not throwing away my full investment.

So... When I look around for the "all around" system, DVD,CD,AM/FM,5.1 etc, most of them advertise "30wXchannel". Now have I missed a step in the stereo technology chain. Can 30 watts really power the speakers I have, or just the little 4" speakers they give you in the package. I can imagine that I would not be turning the system upto the 9 setting, thus receiving distortion through the speakers.

Is there any reason to purchase one of these systems, or would I be better off not wasting the money, and going 1 component at a time, AM/FM receiver/Amp, DVD, CD, tape, etc...

So again, I'm cheap (under $300), live in apartment ( Can't blow the roof off), but appreciate good sound quality.

Poor tools usually result in poor finished results ;) Why buy junk that you'll need to replace to be happy? The components of decent quality I've purchased have each given me many YEARS of enjoyment. (Just my dos centavos)

I've heard some HTIB systems from $300-$1000 & there is a difference.A friend bought a Yamaha on sale for $700 & it works for him. It's not bad. But,no,don't expect to drive your other speakers with it. The HTIB has matched the stuff so they can get a decent sound out of it. Just as you wouldn't want to use the HTIB speakers with a quality receiver,I wouldn't do vice-versa.

I have sold many htib and have had the cheap ones returned because they sound bad, the one I've had the best luck with is a panasonic that retails for around $500 it has seperate receiver, and dvd player and sounds decent, plus one big advantage is the speakers can be upgraded (most of the cheap ones use the small amps and high resitance to lower cost)
