just ordered this blue ray player and paid 59$ because i used my AMEX points!!

i will be using hdmi directly to TV and optical to receiver because my yamaha doesnt support hdmi.

is it worth upgrading to another yamaha receiver to get the hdmi "lossless" audio? or just use optical for now.
Also with the Dish network VIP 722 should i use hdmi or component?

Well, if it was the BD80, then you would have been able to use the analog outs and get the new formats providing your receiver has preamp inputs. The new formats are worth it IMO, but the reason why I went with my Oppo is for the analog outs because it was a lot cheaper than upgrading my receiver for the same reason. Regardless, that is a great deal! Prior to getting the Oppo, I used my (former) PS3 HDMI to the TV and optical to the receiver and it sounds better than standard DD/DTS, but not as good as a good lossless track.

You can get an Ambery decoder if you have a receiver you don't want to part with.

I think the differences are pretty minimal in most setups. Still I prefer not to risk having inferior sound.

With most discs, you will be able to choose those tracks and they will play, but they will play in a stripped down "core" form. As I said, to me, it sounds better than standard DD/DTS, but comparing it to a good lossless PCM track, the lossless tracks I've heard tend to sound quite a bit better than any DD/DTS track I've heard. You wouldn't be able to play a lossless PCM track via optical though; you would only get the main L&R channels. I never ran into a disc that wouln't give me audio whether TrueHD or DTS-HD MA, but that was with the PS3.

Congratulations! That is a terrific deal on a excellent player. If you have the money for a new receiver than sure upgrade your receiver for the current feature set, if not don't worry and just enjoy your new toy.

Hi. I have a BD60 and used it with my non-HDMI receiver for about a month. I bought a new receiver with HDMI, and I didn't notice any drastic difference in the lossless codecs over HMDI versus my old receiver getting audio over the optical connection.

I did not do any sort of side-by-side testing. I just didn't get that "oh, the angels are singing" sensation with the new receiver. So...if you want to get a new receiver, by all means, go for it. I wouldn't upgrade just for the lossless codecs, though. Just my two cents.

thanks adam, I dont plan on upgrading the receiver any time soon for the small improvement in sound. The biggest pain is that the hdmi from the blue ray will be going right to my TV, so now every time i want to watch a movie on blue ray I have to go into the TV menu and change the source to hdmi a. Where as when it runs through the receiver (like my component does now) I just had to hit one button and everything would switch to the appropriate setting.

I think a mistake some make, is they replace their older high end reciever, with a $400 low end receiver, just because the new low end receiver can play Master Audio or True HD.

Frankly, if you have a high end old receiver, and are listening to DD5.1 and DTS over optical, then buy a lower end receiver to replace it just to listen to Master Audio and True HD,I don't think you'll hear a difference.

That's a very good point. In my case, I went from a Pioneer VSX-1015 (top of the non-Elite line in 2005) to a Pioneer Elite VSX-23 (second from the bottom of the Elite line this year). So, I think that I didn't take a step down in quality.

For better and worse, you'll have some time to kill while the BD loads anyhow.

I am with Adam. I absolutely respect the members here who love their lossless tracks, and of course I ALWAYS choose them, but I normally didn't find a big difference. Methinks it depends on the title itself.

OTOH, the video difference is huge. HUGE. Given that your viewing angle lends itself to appreciating, what is it, about a 600% increase in native resolution?

edit: My brother has had a bdp for a while, but non hdmi receiver (remnant from my previous htib ), and as soon as I step into his place I immediately know if it's a BD playing or not. Video difference is the biggest with BD's, though I admit when first anticipating this tech, I thought it would be the opposite.

ive heard there is a loss in bass from the lfe channel when using anolog connections for 5.1 sound is there any truth to that

If your display is less than 1080p in resolution you can still use Component and get the same quality picture.

The owner's manual would imply that it can. However, I don't know for sure if you could can set the digital audio output settings to whatever you want while still getting the desired output from the left/right RCA outputs.

I'm nearly certain that works. Pana has for a while now implemented certain user friendly things like that. For instance, you can have optical and HDMI audio outputted as shotgun I'm pretty sure, whereas with the Sony 350 or PS3, you actually have to fiddle with menu settings.
