Just ordered a new set up for my Dad

Isn't it fun to shop with other people's money :D Anyway, I didn't know exactly where to post this but I just wanted to say I am really happy for my Dad. He just retired from 30 years as a firefighter and today he let me piece together his new home theater system. We ordered a 50" Panasonic plasma and a nice stand. This tv will not be wall mounted. He doesn't care at all about surround sound plus his room is one of the worst I have seen for speaker placement. So I ordered him (with his money and my discount) a pair of Polk RTi12's and the Harman Kardon 3480 stereo receiver. The only thing left to get is the sub. Still undecided as to which to get. Anyway, like I said I am just posting to say I am proud of my Dad and I'm real excited about setting up his system for him when it arrives. If anyone deserves it he does. Thanks for all the help fellas a few weeks ago when I was asking for advice on the Polk speakers ect..

Congrats to your dad, and you too for your 100th post!

Sounds like a great setup. Will he have HDTV via cable or dish? Have him get a Neu or Oppo dvd player until prices level off on Blu-Ray and/or HD-DVD. Need to take advantage of that awesome pic on the Panasonic. ;)

Hey buck, a big thanks to especially buddy for the in depth descriptions of what it takes to get the most out of the RTi line. Could you please post links to the dvd players you are reccomending? Thanks

Thanks for links! Anyone have experience with these? I have an hd upconverting samsung dvd player and I don't like it at all. Terrible black levels and real grainy picture. Seems to get more grainy the higher I try to up convert. In answer to your question he will be getting his HD content via digital Cable

I have had 3 Samsung HD-841's. They were terrible.
I had the NeuNeo 2081 - it was superb.
I had sold that one to a fellow that now uses it to replace his HTPC. He says it works much better.
I now have a NeuNeo 2085. Black levels are great. I have used all these players on a 120" screen.
The 841's did have a pretty good pq. But were plagued with other problems.
I have not had any problems with the NeuNeo's.

After reading AH's review of the Oppo. I was not totally impressed.
But it should be great for bang 4 buck.

I have to say, so far I am hooked on the NeuNeo. I have also used JVC, Panasonic, Sony, etc, etc..

Brian,

I have not seen that new model. Looks to be a "tweener" offering before the HD DVD players come out.

I'd hold on to my $$ before dropping almost $500 on that player.

I'm with you - get the Neu 2085 for now, and wait for pricing to come down on the Blu-Ray/HD DVD players.

They're supposed to start off at $1000 a pop, then after six or so months, drop down to around $500. This is just heresay from PC World, but it's something - nonetheless.

I am not doubting what you are saying in the least however, why would blu ray and hd dvd players cost a grand when the PS3 is going to be a blu ray player and cost considerably less that that? I have read stuff on line saying the first players would cost around a thousand dollars just as you have mentioned but I guess I am just having a hard time understanding how they could do that when the Playstation is going to cost less and do more. Any thoughts?
