Just got Onkyo 605 -- Around $1000 for L,R, and Center

I'm looking to spend around $1000 for a left and right tower and a center channel. I live in an apt with wood floors and dont wanna try and run wires for surround so will do with 3 speakers for the time being -- Already have a 12" sub. Any suggestions. I was thinking of piano black since my Samsung Dlp is in that finish and my new Plateau 75 is cherry (which I have a feeling would be hard to match) Help audio pros --- I'm coming from a HTIB. Thanks!

I agree with Zumbo's suggestion, Although I think that they look better in dark cherry.

I'd like to recommend Aperion Audio, a brand that my friend has paired with an Onkyo and with which he is very happy. I don't own them, but I've heard them. They have a no risk trial period, and they'll even pay shipping both ways if you return them. They have several products, but I picked some that met your criteria:

The Intimus 533-T towers are $375/each in high gloss black, see here.

The Intimus 533-VAC center is $280 in high gloss black, see here.

$1030 for all three.

I don't mean any disrespect towards Aperion, or Adam. But, the FR looks pretty weak on the Aperion. Also, the sensitivity is 89dB compared to BA's 93dB.

Yeah, but they're so shiny. :D

I actually hadn't checked out the specs, so good call, zumbo. My friend has one of their 5.1 systems, so he's running a sub with bookshelves. I don't know if Systembuilder needs or wants low frequencies out of the towers or if that was just a style preference.

Because speaker preference is so personal, I'm a big fan of the ability to try out speakers at no risk. Sure, my friend really likes his Aperions, but Systembuilder might hate them. Hence, the beauty of the 30-day no risk trial.

I would still want my mains to at least make it down to 40hz so a 60hz crossover point could be utilized. It's even better if the center makes it down that far. The BA center gets down to 70hz, so a 80hz crossover point is pushing it with them. But, they should handle it fine.

Thanks for all of the responses. I could consider regular black but would really prefer gloss black or a cherry finish identical to my entertainment center. I'll post a pic of my current setup in a bit (camera is charging).

I've been cursed with caring too much what the setup looks like --- I've spent alot decorating the bachelor pad.

When I'm looking at the specs on a speaker, what should I really concentrate on? Also, are their tiers in which one price range blows away another. I don't wanna fall short of a good class by a small margin, nor do I want to spend too much on some speakers that I will want replace in the near future. How do I know which speakers would pair well with my receivers power output?

Thanks again,
Jonathan

I don't want to limit music or movies so something dynamic would be preferred. (I've seen some guys recommend some setups are better for one or the other) I would like a sound that is super clear and would rather rely on a sub for bass vs the tower if I would be giving up SQ. Thanks again.

Nothing wrong with that and I know the feeling. You want good sound but also want things to kind of match and go together so the room looks like a living room with audio equipment instead of a recording studio with living room furniture.

I've seen the Cherry finish Polks and they do look nice. Whether you like their sound remains to be seen. Black speakers are just so last decade. :)

The problem with 'Cherry' is that there is no consistency - manufacturers can call practically anything cherry. I know because practically all furniture in my house has the word cherry somewhere in its description and although they are somewhat similar they are definitely not the same.
