I am currently trying to set up a small HT system and have come across a Small newbie problem.

I am trying to run a Component cord From my DVD Player (Philips DVDR615/17) to my Receiver (Sony STR-DG500) Then, A Component cord from the Receiver Monitor out of the Receiver to my Television (RCA D52W23)

When I do this, And I go to play a DVD, I get sound - But no picture. I get White lines and a black background.

What in the world am I possibly doing wrong?

(Ive also tried it with a XBox 360, with the same result.)

What happens when you plug the component video directly into TV, bypassing the receiver?

In the component video section on the back of the receiver it says 'assignable' even though the first input is specifically labeled DVD in and the second is labeled Video 2 in. I would assume that they are assigned as labeled by default and you should just have to connect the dvd player to the dvd in under component video.

I would check the setup menus for component video assignment and make sure you assign dvd to whichever component video input you use.

You may want to refer to a manual, as crappily written as it may be, because Sony receiver using interface sucks.:D I would bet good money the assignment just needs changed.;)

I almost ashamd to admit this and it is going to sound REALLY basic, but make sure the TV is hooked up to the "Component Out" and not the "DTV/Sat in"... it was 11 o'clock at night on a Wednesday when I finally got to setup my latest receiver and I'll be darned if I didn't screw that one up :(

Ok - I went through tonight and tried to change the assignment, And it was set to DVD - DVD ( @MDS - I made sure to put it in the DVD In ) and still, no picture?

Ive also checked over and made sure it was going to the component in on the TV itself.

The screen looks something like when a VCR's tracking is off, just without an actual picture.

Hey

In the Sony interface, make sure there isn't another field to move into after DVD-DVD there should be another on to the right, which will allow you to assign where the sound comes from...i'll check mine and get back to ya

If I push Right Arrow again, I get nothing.

However, I dont know if this makes a difference but I am using Coax for sound.

I also think Ive got it narrowed down to the receiver being faulty in some way.

I just got done trying the old receiver with composite cables, and it worked fine.

I think you have to go to the crappy menu interface and in the audio section go to assign and select DVD - Coax... I seriously doubt its the receiver, as i had the same problem with my sony str-dg 800. Also make sure your "Input Mode" button on the front of the receiver isn't set to optical.

Also i forgot to ask you which input are you using on the rear of the amplifier> If you are using video 1 then make sure the amp is set to coax for sound, if using DVD then make sure you have DVD input selected

Also, are you using the DVD input on the back of the amp? I tried using VIDEO 1 and i got only picture, no sound, i think the default sound for dvd is coax , make sure you have the amp on DVD and make sure the COAX light on the display is lit up to switch this push input mode on the front of the amp
