hey guys, after getting some reccomendations from some people on this forum I decided to buy these 3 things:

1. Monitor Audio silver RS1s

2. Yamaha RX-V1600

3. SVS PB12-NSD

I was wondering what other cables I need to buy, I'm a complete noob. Can you include how many of each cable I'll need as well? Also what kind of surge protector or anything else might I need. Thanks.

No cable box or dvd player? If yes do they have optical/coax outputs (Digital), or just RCA outputs?

I have a cable box, not sure about the outputs on that, i doubt it has optical output cuz its kinda ghetto...As far as dvd player I'll have a PS3 hooked up which does have optical output, and hdmi, and i think i'll hook up my xbox360 to it as well.

Most DVD players have a digital output, it may be coaxial. I wouldn't be to concerned about hooking that up though, since you say it is ghetto.

So, stereo analog from the cable box, digital from the DVD player, optical from the PS3 as well as the 360, and I'd use HDMI for the PS3 to your display if it has HDMI/DVI also. That is how I have mine setup, since my receiver doesn't have HDMI, I have HDMI to the TV and audio going via optical to the receiver. One analog RCA (coax or just a regular analog cable) to the sub. Should be able to get all of that at www.bluejeanscable.com

After reading the specs on your receiver I would say you can hook your ps3 up with a HDMI cable. Does your tv have HDMI?

I was going to say use optical for the audio as well. But after reading into it apparently the optical doesn't support 7.1 channels. So I guess HDMI for the win?!?! I guess its all 1's and 0's right? Here comes a new argument HDMI vs OPTICAL, remember the Coax vs Optical thread a while back :p :p :p

Hmmm...didn't check, but the 1600 does have HDMI so that is a good thing. Yes, need to know what the display is and if it has HDMI or DVI also.

I think that is a mistake - if you put in a regular DVD with a 6.1 track, it will play back correctly. It is talking about LPCM 7.1, which you do need HDMI for.

HDMI on the 1600 is only 1.1 so it will not work for SACD, AFAIK. Does 1.1 support HDCP?

Good question, don't know. But yeah I am a fan of optical as opposed to HDMI.
If the tv does not support HDMI I would go with a cheap Optical cable for the audio and a set of component cables for the video.
So you will need 2 sets of component cables to go from your xbox360 and your ps3 to the receiver, 2 optical cables, and then a longer component video cable to run to the tv ( I use coax cable with RCA ends), 1 RCA video cable and 2 RCA audio cables to go from the cable box to the receiver. Depending on what dvd player you have I would just use the play station 3 for dvd's.

2 3 ft Component Video Cables
1 x ft. Component Video Cables
2 3 ft. Optical Cables
1 3 ft. RCA Video Cable
1 3 ft. RCA Stereo Audio Cable
4 5 ft. Strippers ( Payment for free advice )

This is if your TV does not have HDMI.

my tv has a dvi input which i have a hdmi adapter for, the ps3 is currently hooked up to the tv via hdmi and the xbox via component cables. Note, I do not yet have a full 7.1 audio setup, im not doing this til i move out of my apartment in a year or 2, so for the time being the system is just 2.1

Sweet so then all you need is a optical for audio for the xbox, then you need a hdmi from the receiver to the tv, and then component video going to the tv.

I use a Monster Power surge protector.

I am informed that unit is a older version. But I prefer something that can stack in with my equipment and look clean.
I haven't had any issues with mine. I cant say that I have noticed any difference in picture quality. They claim it will. But thats what I have and I like it a lot.
