Per the recommendations on this forum (http://forums.audioholics.com/forums/showthread.php?t=63556), I just bought a 250gb PS3 to function as my BD player and media center in general. Couple questions:

1. I have the PS3 connected to my Pioneer Elite VSX-21TXH via HDMI. When I watch a Blu-Ray movie, instead of the receiver displaying Dolby True HD (or whichever audio format I've selected on the BD menu), the receiver displays PCM. What is PCM? It sounds great, but I've never used it before. Should I change something to have it play Dolby True HD? I'm a little confused here...

2. Can I set up iTunes so that my PS3 can access my music library? If so, how do I do it? I already have my library shared on my home network...

Thanks guys.

Assuming you bought the SLIM model:

On the XMB, go to 'Settings' (the second object from the left), select 'Video Settings', then select 'BD/DVD Audio Output Format (HDMI') and select 'Bitstream'.

Go back to 'Settings' and select 'Audio Output Settings', select HDMI 'Automatic'.

There are different ways to stream things but I use the PS3 media server.

The settings adjustments were spot on. Thanks for that!

I haven't had time to address the suggestion for streaming yet, but all in due time.

Also, another question for more knowledgeable PS3 users (e.g. basically everyone), when you stream content from Netflix, do you have to use the startup DVD every time? Thanks again!

Yes, the disc is what allows you to access Netflix service.

Not a big deal really. The java app on the disc allows you to access your queue from the PS3 so you can add, remove and rate movies right there which is nice.

I've been importing my vast collection of CDs. Can I make the system display them by the artist's name rather than the album name?

Sorry for all the basic questions...

Hit square and change the sort type. Sorting has always been an issue for the PS3, but I do believe your sort/browse options are a bit better on an external drive vs local on the PS3.

Do the older Ps3's not work with this?

Only reason I ask is I just bought a Pioneer VSX-820-K specifically for HD audio only to see the HD audio not popping up on my receiver using my first issue 80GB Ps3. Buddy of mine brought over his stand alone Sony BD-s360 player and the HD audio popped up on the receiver just fine.

That is correct, all versions of the PS3 prior to the Slim do not have this capability.

Peng: Maybe you can help me.... I am running ps3 slim and downloaded ps3 media server to stream my music. I get it to work correctly probably 20% of the time. First, I get contacting ps3- then I get ps3 can't be found; is it on? Of course it's on. I have enabled the force IP server and manually entered my network's IP address still no joy. Then, maybe next day, I try the same thing and it works like a charm. I turn the ps3 off and try again, I am back into the loop of ps3 can't be found. I have re-installed the software multiple times/ re-start my machine, still nothing. I went as far as to turn off all other UPNP devices and still not working? Any ideas-suggestions? Thanks in advance!

You should use the HDMI output and set audio output to Linear PCM. The PS3 will do the decoding. It is not really a problem as the PS3 can decode all of the available HD codecs including DDTHD, DTS-HD-MA.

I don't know what version you are using, and I have not tried all of the versions. I am using 1.20.400 and I do have the same problem, but typically it only happened if I started the PS3 media server before I turned on the PS3.

As long as I turn on the PS3 first the media server will find it almost every time. I also find it interesting that when the media server says it can't find the PS3, I can ignore the message, select whatever media I want to stream, and everything would still work.

Thank you, it works great!!
You're welcome. Don't forget to press the select button to display the codec you are playing on screen. The AVR display will only show muli in or PCM etc., it won't display DTHD, DTS-HD-MSTR for you.

I guess I need to buy a new blu-ray player... I miss the display showing uncompressed formats. I am so used to compressed crap that the industry brainwashed the public, it is time for true audio..

You're still getting the uncompressed/unaltered audio, you just don't get the light on the receiver. Many threads on this.

Just one more question ...
Are there any devices or programs out there where I can capture screen shot in each resolution, and do a comparison
side by side? i know there are calibration devices, but this is mainly for tv, I just want to analize signals coming from fios box, etc.

thanks bro,
Sorry for questions abuse ;)
