Is $2400 - $7500 worth it for JL?

Has anyone purchased one of these subs or have any knowlege of the quality? They seem to be very well built and have front mounted controls which can be convenient. here is a link to the site. http://jlaudio.com/HT/images/f113_G1.htm
Only in cars. I am very much into car audio, and they are one of the very BEST. I would compare their home subs to Martin Logan. The problem is most people won't shell out $2400 to $7500 for one of their home subs. Sure they'll blow away the SVS and HSU subs, but who's going to have the equipment (or the money) to keep up with all that bass? This further states the absolute value for the SVS/HSU subs.

Since these subs aren't due out until June and the 4th quarter, no one has them.

Their pretty sick and knowing what I know about the W7's these probably have ultra low end output, tons of SPL and little to no distortion....and a HUGE pricetag.

You can purchase the JL W7 drivers, make your own cabinets and use a P.A. amplifier and save a ton of cash -- if you really want this type of subwoofer(complete/utter overkill for nearly any circumstance).

Sorry I did not respond directly to your question before. The JL W7 drivers are among some of the most linear, low distortion and well-engineered bass drivers available. I doubt that any other home subwoofer on the market has driver technology as refined/capable as of that used in the JL W7 drivers. As I suggested before: buy some raw W7 drivers and make your own cabinets if you want the best for low $$(relative). If you are not able to make cabinets of sufficient cosmetic quality yourself, you can hire a local cabinet maker to fabricate cabinets to your specifications for a few hundred dollars(still huge savings compared to the retail price of the JL Audio home subwoofer packages).

Adire Audio's brahama and tumult drivers are actually rival's of the W7 and cost less.

I don't know, if memory serves me correctly, the W7's have been shown to have measurably linear behaviour even at near maximum incursion/excursion, with THD in the low single digits at this extreme.

In reality, woofers like the W7 and Tumult don't have any real justification for use in real-world applications - only in those that need to push the woofer to it's extreme limits and still remain linear. This is pretty much an overkill product that is just nice to have. :)

Cheap being relative with the W7. I think the MSRP on the 13W7 is in the neighborhood of 1K just for the driver. The Brahma, RE XXX, and some offerings from Ascendant, Soundspinter (TC sounds) use XBL^2 motor technology which keeps distortion to a minimum at full excursion.

One of the people who works for Adire is a member on on e of the other forums I post at said that driver distortion isn't heard until it's about to die.

W7 = $1k
Brahama = $400 I believe

W7 = 27 mm one way x-max with distortion figures in the low single digits thru all 54 mm excursion
Brahama = 27 mm one way x-max with distortion figures in the low single digits thru all 54 mm excursion

W7 = Name hype
Brahama = Small(er) company without much hype

The JL has a linear displacement advantage due to more surface area. Both are good woofers though. The suspension linearity is also better on the JL which can have it's benefits.
