Jeff Wayne's "The War of the Worlds"

I was at my father's house the other day and I noticed he had the special edition of this title as he's always been a fan of it. I was looking at it and noticed the CDs were multi-channel SACD hybrids. So naturally I had to borrow these and take them home and give them a listen. If you're not a fan of progressive rock then you will probably not like this but I have to tell you I loved it. I am already a big fan of Alan Parsons and Steely Dan. This had a lot of influences in it. I was pretty impressed with the multi-channel mix. Very aggressive use of all the channels. NOT your typical sit and listen with a glass of bourbon music but very enjoyable none the less.

Highly recommended.

It is indeed a very cool recording. Although I don't own it I have heard it several times. I guess I should just pull the trigger and order it.

I am a huge fan of that CD (though not of multichannel music.) I want the live DVD, but it has not been released in the US.

25 years ago I found that in my brothers album collection. Recently I bought the SACD version after getting a player. Forever Autumn is my favorite track. My taste in music, movies and books has changed a lot over the years and I found that I didn't enjoy this as much as I thought I would. However running across this thread has motivated me to want to give this recording a proper listening because when the SACD arrived I only played it for background music. Thanks.:)

I'm not really a fan of multi-channel music either seeing how MOST recording engineers don't know what the hell they're doing. But SOME are very nice when done correctly. War of the Worlds is very agressive with ALL the channels and that is what most people don't like about multi-channel music but I guess the fact that this disc is about an alien invasion it doesn't bother me. In fact, it adds another dimension to the already cool sci-fi theme.

Just my opinion of course. We all have different listening tastes.

I got around to giving that thing the listening to it deserved. I loved it. When I first got the SACD I didn't really have my receiver figured out and didn't own an SPL meter. A couple of years have gone by and I've learned how to better use my system. What a difference.:)

I don't seem to get much output from my sub with this SACD and would like to know if this is what others are finding or if I have an problem. I suspect that I might have a problem with my 6 channel set up but thought I would ask before I start unplugging interconnects. TIA

Is Forever Autumn the track with the Moody Blues singer?
I had no idea that was available in SACD Multi-channel.

I'm so glad I read this thread!! Thank you.

:D

It says vocals performed by Justin Hayward. What's the name of the Moody Blues guy?

Yes that's the Moody Blues lead singer, Justin Hayward, singing Forever Autumn. Check out the Moody Blues Live at the Greek concert DVD for a beautiful performance of this song.

Turns out that the cause for my sub not working with the 6 channel source was that I had my player configure my mains as "large". My receiver does not offer bass management for 6 channel. My player's bass management is very limited but as soon as I configured the mains as "small", my sub started putting out.

Hope that's useful to somebody.

That is peculiar. Is there no .1 on the source? That's the only reason why it wouldn't output the sub when LARGE is selected.

I get nothing from stereo SACD's if I have the player's speakers set to LARGE, but if I select SMALL it sends bass to the LFE.

If there is a .1 on the source it shouldn't care what the speakers are set to, it will send at least the .1 to the SUB unless SUB is set to NONE.

The source is 5.1 surround SACD of the thread topic. That's why I asked here. Also I found that my sub wants to be set to +10 when using the 6 channel audio outs from my player to come even close to being volume matched. I found that using the test tones that my player generates. I'm still on a learning curve I guess. :)

I have found this too.
When I'm using the analogs of the DV-45a I have the sub out set to the maximum +6dB and the receiver set to +8dB.

Odd, isn't it?
