Hi there,

I am the least knowledgable stereo girl there is out there, and I have a pair of JBL XPL 200A Speakers consuming my living room that I just need to get rid of. Problem is I haven't been able to figure out what to sell them for. I was going to try to get rid of them for like $100 but someone told me these are HIGHLY coveted items and that I could likey get more money for them.

They are not esthetically in good shape. They are black laquer but have been scrathed and faded throughout the years. The front screen was also used by a cat as a scratching post at some point in time, and there was some wax spilled down the front (on the left speaker for both incidents). They sound is fine, though I suspect they need a little repair/TLC. Honestly, they were in perfect sound shape when I got them, and I don't think they were ever properly hooked up to the right equipment, so they were never used to their full potential.

I really just want to get rid of them, but I don't want to just give them away if they are actually worth something.

Any thoughts or advice on how much to sell them for or how to try to sell them would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks!

What condition are the domes in?

What's a dome?

Seriously, I'm not smart with speaker or stereo equipment and I'm not totally sure what the "dome" is?

Sorry :(

All internal workings are in good shape. No tears or holes or anything. The left one doesn't sound as crisp as it should BUT that could also be partly a product of the receiver its hooked up to.

Like I said, these probably need some TLC. The exteriors are not in good shape close up. That being said, they were owned by my dad (a HUGE stereo fanatic) from brand new and then me for the last say 6 years. The biggest problem was the speakers were way above what I needed and I really had no idea what I was sitting on, so I didn't do much in terms of caring for them esthetcially.

I will post some photos of them this evening.

Your XPL's were made in the early '90s and were decent loudspeakers. Though not exactly vintage, they are not easy to find. So they may have some intrinsic value. But their condition may bode not so well for a sale...at least not for shipping to someone. They are enormous 4-way speakers and will cost quite a bit to ship.

There should be a lot of information about them, and perhaps you can find a buyer at the Lansing Heritage forum, http://www.audioheritage.org/vbulletin/index.php

Just run a search for XPL200A

Good luck.

Thanks!

Ya I'm not planning on shipping them anywhere, I am going to try to sell them locally. I just wanted to get a sense of the starting price point for getting what they are worth without sitting on them for a long time.

I did post on the Lansing forum so hopefully that gets me somewhere as well.

Thanks!

Good! There are a bunch of real JBL fans there. I think you'll be able to find a home for them. Those are really nice speakers in mint condition. Come back and let us know how it went.

Are you going to replace them with some other speakers?

To be a bit more concise...those are really nice speakers "when" in mint condition.

You need to check the midrange's & tweeters to see if they are all in working order, sounds like you may have a blown tweeter ,it's simple to test without removing the speakers from the cabinets.

Take a dixie cup or a styrafoam cup & cut out the bottom about half the size of your ear, place the cut out over the ear canal & the other end over but not touching the speaker driver, this will tell you on the spot if all speaker drivers are functioning.

Hopefully you allready know this but just incase you dont,do not have the speakers blasting wide open when you do this test, low to moderate levels are all thats needeed.

Selling locally seems like the best bet for guys who are new to selling & dont want a hassel but will not likely bring much cash. Think about advertising the drivers & crossovers seperately on ebay, unless the cabinets are in super great shape the drivers will fetch as much as the total speaker & in some cases even higher.

If you do decide to list the drivers on ebay & your not sure how to properly pack & ship them shoot me a PM & i'll talk you through the packing process.

Ok I've listed them...

I have put them on Craigslist for $800 obo. All the research I did indicated they would sell for around $2000 to $2500 if they were in mint condition, which they clearly are not. The cat has scratched them, someone knocked a candle over and spill wax on them and they are faded and scratched.

I will see where I get with this, and consider lowering the price. Quite honestly, I'd be willing to part with them for not much, if I thought someone would get good use out of them.

Thanks for all your help!

I can't actually post the photos as I have not posted enough on this forum or something. If anyone wants to see them, you can look here:

Cheers for the help!

Cause they do a search in google or Yahoo looking for certain speakers and don't bother to look at the dates on the forums.
