I have a 10" JBL sub for my HT setup. Normally i would leave it alone but i recently got a good deal on a new JL audio sub and it is also a 10". I have looked at the construction of the JBL woofer and im not really impressed but i have some experience with HT and listened to other setups way out of my budget and its decent for what i payed.(aunt's brother owned a high end shop for many years). The construction of the JL sub looks far better than the JBL and they are the same size and i have already checked to see if they would fit. My question would be is of course is it worth it. I have a pioneer sending the signal to the JBL sub amp and i believe the amp on the sub is 350 watts. If it will sound better i have no problem purchasing another JL sub for the car like i was originally gonna do.

The specs probably don't match closely, so the resulting sound is going to be somewhat unpredicatable. It will work, but it may or may not sound great; it is worth a shot for sure.

well after much thought and checking on some specs i have it a go. It took some minor sanding and drilling new mounting holes in the box. I also took the amp out of the back and from the board soldered some heavier wire that was also about 6 inches longer. My biggest concern was ohms. I took the sub apart and there was a sticker that said 2 ohms lol so i wired the dual 4 ohm voice coil in a parallel to achieve 2 ohms. Now on to the performance... It sounds great. Im sure it wont compare to a thousand $ sub but its a bif diffrence and i was happy before.

i will try to post some pics tonight. once question i have is can this affect the reciever in any way? I use the pre out which just sends a clean un amplified signal right? that means if there is any problem just the sub amp could be affected?

You could always built a decent box for the JL driver and throw the JBL plate amp on it. That's what I'm doing right now, but using an Infinity Kappa Perfect.

The subwoofer does not draw power, at least in the sense that you might be thinking, from the receiver. The receiver has a low level variable output that goes up and down with the volume on the receiver, nothing will have changed with the variable output. The subwoofer is completely independant from the receiver in the respect to power.:)
