I am trying to decide to either buy JBL CS6100BG or Jamo S 35 HCS Speakers that includes BIC/Acoustech Platinum Series PL-200 subwoofer. The receiver is an Onkyo TX-NR727. The rooms size is medium at best. Any feed back on this question would be welcomed.

Would the WHARFEDALE - DX-1 HCP be better than the above?

Yes, DX-1 would be an improvement over others, but it's not without it's major faults.
Here are the review with measurements. The speakers don't look too bad, but the sub not so much. I am generally again't buying 5.1 system, especially at this budget levels
Wharfedale DX-1 HCP Speaker System HT Labs Measures | Sound & Vision.

500 what? US Dollars?

If you are in US: I would highly recommend two pairs of AAL's bookshelf - $165x2 and a matching center for another $100. This gives you a real nice 5.0 system on cheap budget

Now Sub wise - above mentioned PL-200 is not that bad, not that great ether - I highly recommend to save up a bit and give HSU Research a call and have them recommend the sub to your budget and room size. I recon HSU STF-2 is not terrible way to start with a decent sub. Placed in the corner it should do good in small to mid sized rooms.

He's my honest opinion:

Your budget is ass for 5.1
Your budget is meh for 2.1
You budget is okay for 2.0 though.

Put some thought into where you wanna put your money. The more quantity you want in your budget, the less quality you get.

And yes, I too would get the affordable accuracy speakers mentioned above - but rather the towers and whatever sub you can swing for.

I think it can be done for $500 as long as you are in the US
$88 center BOSTON ACOUSTICS CS225CII Dual 5.4" Center Channel Speaker Black | Accessories4less
$120 left and right ea BOSTON ACOUSTICS RS230 Reflection Series Bookshelf Speaker Each Black | Accessories4less
$30 surrounds Amazon.com: Acoustic Audio AA321B Surround Speakers, Black, Set of 2: Electronics
$196 sub Amazon.com: BIC America F12 12-Inch 475-Watt Front Firing Powered Subwoofer: Electronics

thats a little over $500, if you want better surrounds you can always upgrade to the fluance surrounds for another $90 but that will put you over a little more over $500... I have heard the sub and the left and rights from what I listed, they are worth more then they cost...

If you are just looking to get something a lot better than the speakers in your tv then the above system will do well, but if you are looking to get something worthy of critical listening with near perfect balance, then your budget should be at least multiplied by 5... If you want to start with $500 and build yourself a really nice system over time, then start with a pair of $500 bookshelfs and setup a 2.0 until you can afford the matching center, then buy a nice sub when you save up around $600 more, then a set of surrounds for another $200, in the end you will be around $1800 and have a decent system, will it be 3-4 times better than the BA's on sale above? thats hard to tell...

what brand(s) would you consider good bookshelf speakers?

what brand(s) would you consider good bookshelf speakers?
There are many companies that make good bookshelf speakers, Sonus Faber, Focal, Revel, Kef, Wharfedale, Ascend, SVS, HSU, Wave Crest, EMP teK, NHT, Boston, Cambridge, ect ect ect

If you are interested in building a system over time and want to spend $500 on the front 2 then you have many choices..
I recommend CBM-170 SE High Performance Bookshelf Loudspeaker with this center channel CMT-340 SEC High Performance Center Channel Speaker
then when you get the money move the 170s to surrounds and get another set of 340's for left and right, or keep the 170s at left and right and get a set of surrounds...

That would make him a decent 5.1 for HT use, nice little starter system. 6 years ago I purchased used two of these Klipsch entry level 12" subs 300/ 650 watt peak and they have not had any issues so I purchased a third one $249.00 shipped for the bedroom on Black Friday Sale several years ago. I am sure there are others as good or better but I thought I would post up this sub as a option.Amazon.com: Klipsch Sub-12HG Synergy Series 12-Inch 300-Watt Subwoofer with High Gloss Trim (Black): Electronics
