JBL LSR 2325p setup question

My wife let me open my Christmas present early! I'm loving these JBL powered monitors. I'm running an optical cable from my PC to an Audioengine D1 DAC, then RCA cables to the speakers.

My question is about volume level. I started with the JBL's volume knobs at around 12:00, and the sound seemed rather flat. Then I tried maxing out both the PC and DAC volume levels, and found that 4 clicks on the JBL's knob (9:00 position) works for me - any more is painful. Is this the optimal setup for getting the best dynamic range? I want the RCA cable to carry as much voltage as possible, right?

It sure sounds fantastic this way. I'm glad I got the 2325 and not the 2328; the bass is plenty for me if I use the "Loudness" EQ setting in iTunes.

With exactly same setup as you :) I got this setup this way:
JBL's volume between 10 and 11. D1 volume at 12 and Windows volume - is the only I'm adjusting for same of convenience. Usually kept at %15-30 and rarely at %50
Probably quality wise it would be best to set it on D1, but it's volume range control is really weird for pro monitors... Works good for headphones thou :)

And yes - they have TONS of bass. Try to Avatar from good source - the shuttle landing early in the movie - set higher volume and your will shake
