Hi All,
I am Jazz newbie and I kinda like jazz.....so far what ever I heard(overheard in a mall or walking past a club). I am really looking for some albums that I could listen in any mood. I kinda like ones that use more of the wind instruments like Sax and so on. I am also looking for male vocals with husky voice....generally the ones that you hear in a decent mall .....kinda one that you hear around Xmas :)
Please list as many as you can think, off the top. I really like to go over all of the suggestions, and audition them all, and buy some timeless jewels.
Thanks Much,
Sandeep

Start off with the two best jazz records there are (IMOHO); 1) The Dave Brubeck Quartet, "Time Out" & 2) Miles Davis, "Kind of Blue". Those are my very favorite classic jazz discs.

Beyond that, for newer vocal stuff I recommend any Micheal Franks. I especially like "Dragonfly Summer." Very good stuff.

Jazz is so varied but a good point to start would be with the likes of Stan Getz, Milles Davis, Maha Vishnu Orchestra, Coltrane, Corea, Bella Fleck and for the moderns it is Diana Krall and Norah Jones if you like vocals. This is just a few, there are so many and the talent is infinite.

Chesky has some of the best Jazz recordings and SONY too has some good titles, suggest you check them out.

Also wanted to add Di Meola, Atkins to this list which is still way short by the talent standards in Jazz.

I have close to 400 Cd's and most of them are Jazz. It would be one heckuva long list. In any case; try some Pat Metheny, Weather Report, Yellowjackets, and anything from Miles Davis and John Coltrane for starters. I just picked up some Arturo Sandoval; He is a great player.

Hi,
I've also gotten into Jazz from a HIREZ perspective in the last 12 months and apparantly there are certain albums that are "must own" such as Kind of Blue by Miles Davis (I've probably got 8 sacds of his) and John Coltrane's 'A Love Supreme". Cal Tjader, Art Blakely and many others

You may however find that some of these albums are HIREZ but stricly 2ch due to the fact that its a small ensemble.
Anyway CONCORD Jazz has an exellent sacd library of Jazz greats and If you Google the subject you'll get all kinds of info.

I was amazed to find that there is a large hard covered book devoted solely to "A Love Supreme"
Lady in Satin by Billy Holiday is another great one.

If you want to kick back with some geat sax Dave Koz and Chris Botti are excellent. I'm jumping back and forth from dvd-a to sacd here. Estaban is another awsome album.

Go to mapleshaderecords.com and listen for free to some of their selections. My favorite is the J Street Jumpers "Is You Is Or Is You Ain't My Baby?" I also like Sweetman, which has some really dirty sax on it. Another good one is Bad Influence's "Bad Company." They will send you any four for $38.40, including shipping, and it's well worth it. The sound quality on the ones I've mentioned is excellent.

Some other options ...

Consider Tierney Sutton's discs on Telarc (outstanding SACDs -- start with Something Cool but also "Dancing in the Dark", a disc of Sinatra covers). On standard CD there is "Blue and Green" for Bill Evan's material & "Unsung Heroes".

Jane Monheit's DVD-A "Dream with Me"

Sarah Vaughan - "Round Midnight".

Don't forget Mel Torme's numerous discs -- there's some nice ones with Rob McConnell and the Boss Brass on Concord.

Bill Evans Trio (Portrait in Jazz, Sunday at the Village Vanguard).

Brad Mehldau -- The Art of the Trio volume 3.

Jim Ferguson (bass, vocals) "Not Just Another Pretty Bass"

If you like jazz and don't own a copy of Miles Davis's Kind Of Blue you're just a pretender. I own 1000 plus jazz lp's and cd's. I can compile a list of what I consider essential if requested. Dave Coz Boney James and the like play smooth jazz, otherwise known as urban contemporary music. Many jazz fans do not consider this jazz. Fortunatly here in Phila. we have WRTI 90.1 FM which does play real jazz. I do own and listen to Boney, Dave and the others.

Oscar Peterson stuffs are very easy to listen to and relaxing, couple of my favs: We get Requested, Night Train, and Skol (this is a live album with Stephane Grappelli).
Duo by Charlie Hunter & Leon Parker is an excellent album. If you like old vocal jazz, try out Johnny Hartman (notably, John Coltrane and Johny Hartman).
