I've never been stumped, please help

So heres what I'm dealing with. Got one of those old Bose set ups, helping a friend, with the receiver to sub then sub to speaker. He has a first generation samsung 4k, with that external HDMI hub. I sold him my old pioneer vsx, maybe 818, a while ago. It worked for a while then stopped when he moved stuff. My problem is getting the audio to come out of the receiver. i.e. if I go PS4 (HDMI) to tv hub then tv hub out (optical) to receiver I get no sound. I check the output setting on tv to make sure it's optical. I also make sure nothing is going through arc, as the pioneer does not have that. If I go PS4 to receiver (HDMI) then HDMI to tv the sound passes through to the tv and doesn't come out of the speakers hooked to the receiver. I even switched to an old pioneer plasma (still awesome btw) and Yamaha receiver and the same thing happened. I feel like theres some dumb thing I'm missing so please embarrass me.

Yea, we changed it the audio settings from tv speaker to optical out. But also isn't it weird that even when we go straight to the receiver then the tv the sound still comes out of the tv?

Generally if you want the speakers connected to the receiver to play, then you have to go to the HDMI set up menu and paradoxically set HDMI audio out to OFF. If it is on, only the TV speakers play.

Well we have a thread running now about Samsung TVs and getting audio out. I just did a quick search and it seems that optical audio outs of huge range of Samsing TVs stop working.

I have had a look at the terrible massive manual of yours and I think you have it set up correctly.

Now I have said many times before that Smart TVs are anything but smart, in fact extrememly dumb.

From an engineering stand point smart apps do not belong in a TV that is part of an AV system. It is the wrong place to have them.

A TV should be an end device with the only button you should need after set up being the on/off button. That is the only button I ever use on my TVs.

So what needs to happen is that everything goes to the receiver first, and the sound goes from receiver to speakers, and the video goes from receiver to TV. If you keep to that rule life will be bliss. Break it and expect massive problems and hassles like you are experiencing.

The 2016 Samsung KS8000 I have, sucked using the optical to my old receiver because there was a lip sync issue and my old 2003 receiver had no lip sync adjustments so I ended up getting a Yamaha 2060 and using hdmi and now things are great. I use the lip sync feature on the Yamaha with the hdmi to get the audio perfectly matched to the picture. (Just using hdmi without lip sync adjustment was a huge improvement over using the optical). Anyhow my KS8000 and 2060 and my Sony x800 all have hdmi 2.0a so hopefully I’m set for a while.

@OP, My Son has a Samsung 65” curve 4K think he paid 6.500 for it with the outboard HDMI. We ran into the same issue you’re having just like TLS Guy said in his post that Exactly how it should be set up. I personally have used my setups that way and Never had an issue until my Son,s setup with his Samsung 65”. The only way we could get sound to his speakers was to run optical out to his AVR. We tried everything with HDMI got nothing to work was so frustrating nothing made sense. To this day it’s still being used with optical out. After reading your Thread and the old timers response makes sense with Samsung units. I had a 51” plasma Samsung back in the day never had that issue until my Sons outboard Samsung tuner. These old timers are very good with technical issues.

Thanks for looking into it! The weird thing about all this is that we switched the setup and hooked is up to an old plasma. Still the sound passed through to the TV. This was my old receiver, which i used as a passthrough, and so i dont see why it would be set to send the audio through. My friend may have lost the remote so I can't really check. I guess my only hope is that the optical is bad and I can replace that and just run an optical from the PS4/Cable Box direct to the receiver.

Well if you have no remote to check settings, then how can we help? The manual says the TV audio must be set to anything OTHER than TV to get audio back out of the TV.

I was talking about the remote for the receiver. We for sure changed the audio for the TV to the optical out instead of the TV speakers when we had it hooked up like that. I just didnt know if i was missing something on why the audio would pass directly through the receiver back to the TV. I really do appreciate the help. I guess it will just take some more tinkering. Killer set up BTW TLS.

I know, but for this to work the receiver must be set correctly. It is covered on Page 17 of your receiver manual. If you want sound to go to your TV then the HDMI audio setting must be set to THRU. If you want to hear sound from receiver speakers using HDMI then you must not have it set to THRU.

Next you do have to set up and assign the inputs. You must use rear panel only. The audio inputs have to be set individually on that receiver so that they are assigned to HDMI, optical or analog.

I don't see any way of setting this up without the remote. If you don't have it you are SOL if you don't get another remote.

Read your receiver manual carefully and you will see what I mean. I would bet the inputs you are using are not assigned to optical, or the HDMI setting is wrong. The fact two TVs do not work means you receiver is not set up correctly for what you want to do.

And also check the volume on the receiver. Sound from tv’s own speakers can be on at same time as sound from many receivers if receiver is used as the hub (which it should be except possibly only for 4k source if it doesnt support that)
