They are an acquired taste.
I started with MMG's and if all you've ever lived with are monkey coffins, there's an adjustment period.
First off, the don't have a lot of bass. ...never will. But, what they can't reproduce they tend to ignore. That makes it easy to run a powered subwoofer with them. Simply run both full range and use the xover in the sub as a low-pass filter set tho where the MMG's start rolling off, say around 70 hz or so.
Second, they like room, lotsa room. You have to get them a few feet from all walls. Even then you're gonna have to play with toe-in to get the best imaging.
Finally, they do like power and you're fine there, but no matter how much power you throw at them, there will never be a lot of bass. Even then, it's possibe to "fart" them out if you try to push too much power into them. You'll hear it when you cross that bridge. They start to sound congested and nasal. Remember, they are entry level planars.
but, once you dial them in, you'll get imaging like you've never heard. ...and the larger maggies afre even better at conveying an uncanny spaciousness. ...oh, even though you say you don't want too much bass, a well integrated sub can do wonders.
But, like any speaker, it may not be for you. Keep all the packing stuff and, as the end of the free trial approaches and you still don't like 'em, send 'em back.
P.S. don't even think that different cables will change anything here. It's all in the room.
