This is most likely elementary stuff but for whatever reason my Internet comes to a standstill every 20-30 minutes. I go from the usual 20-50 Kb/sec to 160 BYTES!

...the only thing I can do is close the browser and open a new one and it's back to normal....for another 20-30 minutes. What's my computer doing?

Oh, I'm using a Dell inspiron 5160 laptop running XP and firefox.

Have you tried emptying your temp internet files/cookies? You might also run out of memory when you are switching to several different MS Office programs to your web browser through hyperlinking. You may also reboot your modem/router if it really slows you down even after you open up a new browser. Hope it helps..:)

I empty my temp files weekly(Use a program called CleanUp!) Really don't multi-task, just surf the web(I have 1GB of ram and at the most I've used 55%). I have no control over our router, it's in a different room that I don't have access to.

The service we have here sucks anyways. I'm paying $75 a month for a 75kb/sec download service(I forget what the upload speed is) which is the fastest they offer.

Would flushing my DNS files work?

EDIT: I am running zone alarm also which, from what I'm reading, has caused some connectivity issues.

If you haven't already... download a good spyware scanner like Adaware 6.0 or Spybot- Search & Destroy. The last might appeal to you on name alone :D Do a search for these on download.com.

If you are sharing this connection with other people, are they having the same issue?

Hey Matt.

If your problem persists, could you answer a few questions?

Are you doing anything different/special (for example - downloading a torrent) when your connection slows down?

Do you have the same problem when using a different browser (for example - IE)?

What extensions do you have installed in firefox?

Are you behind a router?

How much memory do you have?

Your answers will help pinpoint the issue. But if it’s fixed…

Whatever you do - Don’t Mess With It! :) LOL:)

Later,
Panther
