Hey all,
I know that what I am about to show you is probably not the most idealistic audiophile's dream system, however it is a VERY large step up for me from what I had, and should be able to be built on very nicely. I am really excited so far about it. On Saturday I finally got the chance to go and purchase the first few peices of my new sound system. Here is what I have so far:

Marantz SR5600 7.1 surround A/V receiver
Paradigm Titan bookshelf speakers
Paradgim CC-270 center channel speaker
Pioneer 588a DVD/CD/DVD-A/SACD/DivX player
Toshiba SD-1600 DVD player (being used as CD player through digital coax)
JVC TD-W205 Audio Cassette Player
RCA 4 head (mono!) VHS VCR
27 inch RCA TV (crt with s-video input)

I hope to eventually get a nice subwoofer, some surround speakers, don't know if I will eventually get towers for the front and then use the Titan's as surrounds, or if I should just go ahead and get some nice surrounds. I would also like to eventually swap out the old VCR for something that won't eat my tapes, and is in at least stereo. It's over 10 years old, so it's due... I would like to get a nicer widescreen tv at some point, but I still can't decide on what I like. I definately want to be able to do HD with it, hopefully 1080p.
Anyway, that is all in the plan for now, and it gives me something to look forward to. Just like when you were a kid, looking through the toy catalog, planning and scheming ways to afford something big. Then you finally get it, you love it, and you want to get the next big thing and it starts all over again! :)

In any case, this is all way better than listening to my cd's through the TV speakers...

I was about to ask the same thing!! It's rare to see an AM loop these days :D

Nice clean setup BTW. If you're thinking of 1080 HD though, getting a good sized TV might be a tight squeeze for that cabinet!

Ha, that is a nice evil cat, evilkat.:)

I was just browsing through the old members home theater setup area and decided to resurrect a few of them.

Good start man. Just remember, this is a hobby, and since it is a hobby, you never are truly finished.

Definitely get a larger screen, there's plenty of time for that in the future. Enjoy it.

I'd try to bring the front speakers down from the cabinet and put them on stands beside it.

My phone doesn't have a camera either, I am really stone age. I happen to own 2 CD players from the 80's if that tells you anything.:D

forgot about this thread...

Hey guys,
Just looked and saw that some people had posted on this thread, and I had forgotten all about it. Things have changed a little bit since that last post. My VCR went out, and we replaced it with an S-VHS by JVC, so at least it is in stereo now. I actually rarely do listen to AM, nor even FM at home for that matter, I just never have removed the old AM loop. Just in case I want to listen to Rush or something one day... ;)
The speakers are actually up there on purpose, for safety reasons. Safety for my speakers that is. I have two young children, 3 and a half and 1 and a half that can't seem to keep their little mitts off of anything, so I know if I put these things on stands, well you can imagine what would happen to them. I've already had to clean milk off of the TV several times, and hand prints all over the glass in front of the components. Thankfully they don't really try and get into it often. I have been considering some Martin Logan Clarity's or Mosaics, and a Grotto Subwoofer, but at this point, I don't want anything where the kids are going to screw it up, so I am stuck with this system for now, for at least a few more years. Though, I may still be able to get a new amp sometime between now and then. Prepare for the ML's later. However I have to admit that I really do like the system I have, though the speakers are too high up. It does mess with the sound a lot. Even so, they still sound good. I'm very impressed. It's funny to go to any store where they sell "audio" equipment, and take a listen, and realize that what they are showing off Sucks big time!
Anyway, thanks for bringing this back up!

I feel your pain. Although I have a dedicated "spot" where my 2 year old isn't allowed without my supervision, my living room (which is in dire need of an audio makeover) is fair game. Right now I have some Infinity PB160s up from the floor beside my TV, to keep the boy's hands off of them.

I saw some pretty decent 18 inch stands at racksandstands.com that might work. The look pretty stable and solid. I could look to mounting them on the wall behind the TV...

But I want to finish my room first!

My how things change!

Folks,
Haha! You aren't going to believe this, but I guess I just got a really bad case of upgrade-itis. I haven't had my Titan's for quite a year yet, so this is really funny... I just bought some new speakers. Yeah, I know I already posted here not too long ago that I wasn't going to do this for a few years, but well, plans change. Drastically.

Here is how it went down. The 15th is my anniversary, and my Wife actually suggested the night before that since I have constantly been talking about these ML speakers and subwoofers that since we would getting a baby sitter for the kids that maybe she could take me to Paradyme and I could show her all this stuff that I have been talking about for months now. She had promised that with the tax return money that I could buy a subwoofer, but only as long as she could hear it and see it in person and make the judgement on it. So I happily took her up on the deal, and brought her there the next evening before we went to the restaurant.

Well, I started out by listening to the Martin Logan Clarity since that was one that I had really been interested in listening to lately. They had stuck them off in a corner of the store, where the accoustics were really awful, but even with the awful accoustics, they sounded really nice. Very clear, and the imaging was nice too. Then I stood up, and the sound dropped off dramatically! I guess that is normal with an electrostatic speaker though, I have heard a lot about sweet spots etc. But that's when I realized that we don't always sit down in front of the speakers when we are listening, we are often up and around, especially with kids. So perhaps in the room that we have right now, those would not be the best choice. Owell, so I took her to hear the Martin Logan Mosaics that I have been drooling over too.

I found that whenever I moved around, either up or down, I could still hear them very well, and it didn't muffle at all. The sound was very solid in comparison to the Clarity, which had a bit more of an ethereal sound to it. Not sure how to really descibe it other than that. So I told my wife, that they were the $1800 speakers... The salesman said, "actually, they are on markdown because there are only these floor models left plus two more pair in the back. ML is phasing these out and getting a new model out soon." So they had marked them down by $500! I did some quick figuring and realized that the bonus I had gotten at work would just about cover it exactly! So I said, "Uh honey, can we talk about this for a bit?" So we discussed it and figured I would have them put the speakers on hold overnight while we went over the budget at home. This was Friday evening. So we went to dinner, and had a good time, then when we got home we went over the budget and figured that we could get the speakers, and then after the tax return, I could probably come back and get a subwoofer, either the Dynamo or the Grotto. Whichever I prefer at that point.

I hardly slept at all that night. When I did, I dreamed about the Mosaics. I know, it's sad. Like a little boy on Christmas Eve... I woke up about 6:30 and couldn't get back to sleep, so I got up and stayed up. After running a couple of errands, my wife told me ok, you can go now... So I went straight to the store, and they were actually surprised to see me. They didn't think that my wife would actually let me do it. So I loaded them into the Tracker, (tight fit, but it worked) and went straight home and got them hooked up. Oh the Wonder and the Beauty of it all! What a wonderful room filling sound, and they are not even broken in yet! I also don't have a good amp on them yet, but I will probably do that soon too. I am thinking of maybe a Rotel RB-1070. I am pretty sure that it would work fine from the specs, and the price is nice too.

Anyway, Here are a few pics of the new setup:

Pic 1: Full Frontal shot of the entertainment center with the Mosaics off to the sides.

Pic 2: Right speaker with reflection of the Christmas Tree in the glass.

Another nice thing, and quite a surprise too, the kids have not really taken much interest in playing with them. Of course as soon as I set them up, I brought both of them over, and showed the speakers to them and said, "Don't Touch." My little son was cute. He stood up, looked at them, shook his finger at them and made a stern face, and said "no, no, no!" And walked away. My daughter looked me square in the eye and said, "Ok daddy." And so far, so good. So I guess I will try this out and see how it works. Maybe I'll just play 1812 overture a few times and blast the cannons at them a few times, and they won't dare come near them anyway.

Anyway, your comments and ideas are welcome. Merry Christmas!

Nice. I heard those around Thanksgivingtime and thought they had a pretty nice sound too.

Nice purchase. Does the Marantz stuggle with the towers?

You may be able to get a 32" LCD in your cabinet.

Congrats on the anniversary. Your post was too funny. We all get that way, like the kid before Christmas, can't sleep. I bet those speakers sound great. Just let your wife know that this is a hobby, so you'll never be finished.

I've got a 22 month old, so I know all about the "Don't touch". Sometimes it works, sometimes it just advertises "Hey, Daddy's got some cool stuff to touch." I would worry about it too much, they'll be fine. The only thing they might mess up is the grill, but those shouldn't be too expensive to replace if they get messed up.

Buckeyfan,
Amazingly enough, it doesn't sound like it does. Though, I know it's not rated to run them. They are 5 ohm nominal, and the Marantz is only rated for 6 minimum. However they do run, and quite nicely too. I am not going to keep it in this config for long however. I am planning on an amp in the next couple of months. I will probably borrow an amp from a dealer and try it out and see how it goes, and then if I like it, go ahead and buy it.

As for a new TV, the wife has proclaimed that until this one breaks we are NOT getting another one. I actually don't have a problem with that. It's not a bad TV. It's old, but it has an S-Video port on it at least. I am not as concerned with my video as I am with my audio. That and I have just not found any flat panel screens that I really like yet. I've not been truly impressed with any of them. At this point, if it broke, I would probably just go with a slightly larger (and better quality) tube tv, maybe something with component inputs, if such a thing exists...? I don't know for sure if tube tv's have component inputs, I've never looked into it. I'm waiting for SED tv's to come out.

Whats this with AM radio? How funny. Actually I very rarely ever listen to either AM or FM in my setup. I just have them there "just in case". Actually neither of them sound very good at all because if you move around the room, you seem to get in the way of the signal and it fuzzes out. Could be placement issues, and a short 2 ft. fm antennae (stock, came with receiver). Owell, I prefer SACD's and DVD-A anyway. :D
