issue with receiver/tv compatibility

Hello all! This is my first post here as a new member, so I'm hoping to learn some things and if possible, receive some guidance on my options on how to solve my issue.

Here goes... So I purchased a Denon 1910 receiver recently and a cheap Onn 50" Roku TV. This TV only has two options for audio out. One is HDMI - ARC and the other is optical cable. After enabling the ARC setting on the HDMI port and connecting to my Denon, I got no sound to my receiver. After research, I learned that my Denon is not ARC compatible.

I then tried to use a brand new optical cable to connect the TV to my receiver, but this time I realized there is not any setting in the TV menu to send the audio through the optical out. I have searched and found many posts about this same issue but most of them were either left unresolved or solved using means that do not pertain to my specific situation.

I have read that I need to manually select the option on my receiver for it to switch from the default HDMI setting for the assigned device (TV, DVD, Etc.) to use the optical cable instead, but the manual is difficult to follow at best, and I have not been able to accomplish this as of yet. (Also, I was sent the incorrect controller with my receiver and I am unsure if there are functions accessible only with the exact controller and that might be why I haven't figured it out yet... Controller is a similar model of Denon and most buttons work on my unit though)

So my questions are as follows:
1. Is there an intermediary device (blue ray, DVD player, converter, etc) that would be ARC friendly that I could connect my TV to, and then connect my receiver to via regular HDMI, that could solve this issue?
2. If I use an intermediary device for this, how much quality will I lose (if any)? And if some is lost, would it be so much that it would lower the quality to regular AV cable levels? (If so, I may as well save the money and just connect via AV now)
3. Can anyone think of why the optical out on the TV would not automatically work (all auto detect features are on, and I have HDMI - ARC turned off and all cables removed), or if there is any scenario I would have to do something in settings to force it to send the data? (Remember, nowhere in the menu settings is an option available for it even when cable is in and red light coming through it)
4. (Sidebar) If I were to transmit a signal to my receiver via external Bluetooth hardware, is there usually a noticeable loss of sound quality on a home audio system, versus my Bluetooth speaker or headphones where I haven't noticed it?

Thanks for listening y'all, and I hope I'll learn some stuff in the replies too. If you need any more info, just let me know.

That doesn't make any sense. There is no reason to install an digital optical audio output if it can't be used.

Try this after you connect a spdif cable from the TV to the Denon:

1. Press the * button
2. The "Options" menu will appear.
3. Select "Advanced Sound Settings"
4. Select "Volume Modes" & turn to "Off"

Hello MyWittsEnd. Go into the TV menu. Scroll down to Settings and click on it. Now, scroll down the Settings list to Audio and you should see the current speaker settings. It should not be set to TV Speakers. If it is, switch it. Now, connect your optical cable from the TV optical output to the Optical 1 input on the Denon. It should be labeled (TV) and should already be assigned to the TV input selection unless it has been changed. You can navigate the settings menu of the Denon with the buttons on the front of the unit. If you have the Denon connected to the TV via an HDMI cable you will be able to see the setup menu. If not, you can still do it using the receiver's display screen. If your remote control does not work properly, click the menu button on the front of the Denon and use the direction buttons to scroll down to number 5: Input Assign and select it. The list of inputs will come up starting with the DVD input. Scroll down to the TV input assign section. Make sure the (HDMI) and (Comp) assignments are blank and (Digi) is set to O1 for the Optical 1 input. If not, scroll over to the (Digi) section and press enter. The selection arrows should come up and you can move through the selections and click on O1. Press the return button to back out of the menus or hit the menu button to be taken right out. Try streaming something from the TV and see if you get audio to the Denon. Oh, and make sure HDMI-CEC(ARC) is still off in the TV. Maybe use an HDMI input NOT labeled (ARC) to connect the Denon. Hope you work it out.
