I have had my HK 3380 for about a month now. I read several reviews and one said he had to put rubber grommets under the PS to make the hum go away. When I first got it I didn't notice anything. Then in about a week or so I began to notice a humm but only if I had the vol way up and the source selector to something neutral (such as CD with the CD player turned off). Today I muted the FM to answer the phone. I didn't have it up too far but I did notice a slight hiss (better description than hum) coming out of the speakers.
I have the chassic grounded.
Has anyone had a similar problem? I have everything plugged into a surge protector that I think was also suppose to surpress RFI (had it with the old reciever and TV etc for about the last 15 years or so) I don't recall the brand name but is I know it wasn't all that expensive.
Would isolating the PS help/

Do you by chance have a cable TV connection to the setup? If so, disconnect it and see if it helped.
Temporarily try a cheater plug, 2 prong plug?

I had some static for a while. It ended up that my preout cables were too close to my power cords, and a 60Hz noise was inducted into the line before it got to my amps. Which then off course, amplified it (the unwanted and wanted noise). :D

Good job boys. Strong like ox, smart like bull. :D

After seperating the cables (by approx 12") the bad stuff went away.

You could try seperating your patch cords / power cords / speaker cables / etc. (even for temporary test purposes) and see (or listen) if the static hiss does away.

If all else fails you could punch out your tweeters, but it's highly recommended that you don't. :D

PS: what does PS stand for?

PS is power supply. Yes the cable TV is near by. I disconnect the chassic ground and most of he noise went away. Of course the AC is still a grounded plug. I will try separating the cables. Not an easy task, not a lot of room back there to move things around. :D

OK, the cable TV cable is nearby but is it connected to the hifi in someway through the TV then audio to the hifi is one way, or audio from cable TV to hifi. Disconnect any such connection and see what gives:) which cable makes it go away, so do it one at a time. I think it may be the coax video cable. Let us know. You could do this before separating all the other cables.

The TV cable only goes to the VCR and then down to the TV. The only link, other than plugged into the same powerstrip,
is the DVD player via the audio cables. Thus when we watch a DVD the sound is via the stereo. But there is still a slight humm even when the TV and DVD is off but is very slight.

All these lower hum indicates a ground loop. And, possible that transformer is not packed well enough and the lamination are moving.
That part is tricky as it needs troubleshooting inside. That I cannot recommend here.
