ive been out of the loop for a year or so... but i am in the market for a new receiver. ive been partial to onkyo but defiantly not limited to.

my needs...
at least 2 zone (need the ability to have my main room plus a 2.1 set up on my patio)
HDMI
HD radio would be nice

thats really about it.
the speakers that it will be driving are going to be towers, havent decided between NHT or Ascend and a SVS sub

ive looked at the onkyo 806, 876, denon 3808, outlaw 997...

just not sure, there are so many options and features... i was hoping to get some good guidance (like i have before) from people around here.

thanks everyone

When it comes to receivers it's pretty easy. Yamaha, Denon, Onkyo, Pioneer all make good stuff. Find the one with the features you need/want and can get the best deal on. I'm partial to Denon, there are those that love Onkyo, and others that swear by Yamaha. What is your budget? Do you have any space restraints?

By the way I'm not sure that any receivers have 2.1 outs for the second zones, none that I know of any way. So if you'll want to run a sub in the second zone you'll need to have one with speaker level inputs and run the speakers through it.

no budget so to speak.. have to keep the wife happy... i kind of though $1000 would be nice...

i found this info on onkyos site referring to the Integra DTM 7.8

Zone 2 Fixed/Variable line Out
Zone 2 Fixed/Variable Subwoofer Out
Zone 2 Tone/Balance Control
Zone 2 Max/Power On Volume
Zone 2 Composite Video Out
Zone 2 HD Component Video Out
Zone 3 Fixed/Variable line Out
Zone 3 Max/Power On Volume
Zone 3 Fixed/Variable Subwoofer Out

Ah ok. Well now you're over $1000. The MSRP on the 7.8 was $1300, and if you look at the site the new 7.9 doesn't have sub outs you have to go to the 8.9. Which of course is going to mean more money.

1300 if fine.. if the options justify the extra cost i dont mind...

so the 7.8 can do second zone 2.1?

If you can still find a 7.8 or a used one yes it shows that it has 2.1 outs for zones 2 and 3. Note you will need an extra amp or be able to set up the rear surround channels of the 7.1 to run the speakers in zone 2, I didn't look to see if you could do that. That does add to the cost as you're buying another piece of equipment. If you can't find a 7.8 it seems that the 8.9 is going for over $1500 and again you may still need to buy a 2 channel amp to run the speakers. You definitely will if you want to run 7.1 in your main room but may not have to if you're just running 5.1. Most receivers can be set up to use the rear surrounds for zone 2, my Denon comes from the factory set that way.

well turns out i found an 805 and a 7.8 for sale localy... and they are both about the same price... i honestly dont know which one to look at...

at first thought i would say the 7.8, but that reciever for under 1000 makes me think something is wrong with it...

and second thought.... how do you test a second hand reciever to make sure evrything works... ???

You should be able to pick up an 805 for $650 or less.

oh yeah, ive found an 805 for $500 and a DTR 7.8 for $650

with the prices being that close, i dont know which to look at... $500 seems about spot on for an 805, but $650 for a 7.8... fishy..maybe... thats 1/2 the retail...

$500 is about half the retail of an 805 so $650 for the 7.8 seems like a good deal. As for checking it, there's only one way that I know of... Hooking it up and trying it out. I don't know of any other way to test it and see if it works.
