Just about any current receiver from any of the major brands meet your criteria. At the sub-$500 price point however, some of them only offer HDMI 'pass-thru' which basically means they can pass the video on to the TV but cannot process the audio.

Ideally you want one that can act as a 'repeater'. The Onkyo TX-SR605 is one such receiver and there are comparable receivers from the likes of Denon and Yamaha too.

$500 won't really get you much that's worthwhile.

You can get a decent used or refurb receiver for around $200. It won't accept HDMI input for sound, but all you need is optical audio cables to the receiver and HDMI to the TV.

$500 for a "surround sound" system is, IMO, not really worth it.

If you're frugal, you can find a good deal on some L/R speakers for maybe $100, a center channel for maybe $150, some surrounds for $80, and a sub for about $200.

That's piecing together a system from various and eBay, though. Anything you buy in a box for $500 is, IMO, not really worth the money you spent.

$1000, all at once, will get you a *****in audio system (5 speakers + sub) from SVS. Add $200 or so for a receiver, and for $1200 you have a great system.

figures

but like i said im kinda handy caped when it comes to this kinda stuff i thought i saw some "decent" htib's like for instance the sony ht ss2000.do u know if this or some thing like this would be able to play all audio from only hdmi wires? and do so properly with a ps3 and hd cable box?that might also allow me to plug in i pod. cuz the way u and others, who know what ure talking about. it will take me forever to put together a system that way,and i know its most unlikly i would love to see it all in one box and easy to install.lol i dont know if any such thing exists though....thanks for any advice given

If you don’t get HDMI processing in the receiver, which others who have shopped say you won’t in your price range, then the new HD sound formats are out and the best you can do for sound is Dolby 5.1, 6.1 or 7.1 depending on what you buy. For that you need two optical (toslink) cables. One goes from the PS3 to a receiver optical input and a second connects your cable box optical output to a different receiver optical input. So your receiver needs at least two optical inputs and your cable box needs one optical output. You also need two HDMI cables to connect the cable box and the PS3 to your TV. I second the SVS 5.1 speaker and subwoofer recommendation because it has a good low extension subwoofer for the price class. Your receiver needs to have at least two optical inputs and hopefully about 70 watts per channel times five channels. It should also have a subwoofer output which is almost a given nowadays. If you don’t have the money now, I would wait and save more up rather than buy something less than this.

i would have to agree with the other guys, if you cant afford it all now, dont bother, you are better off sticking with the sound from your tv for the time being. wait until you have more money saved to afford a decent set up. i dont have a lot of money either but i have loked around and got bargains on the net and just peiced it together. if you want the best price, IMO, this is the way to do it. heres a break down of how i started and what i did..

sherwood main speakers (pump REAL well!) $80 the pair s/h and also got a 5disc cd player, amp, and wiring.

after this i bought myself a proper sourround sound and video receiver which was brand new online for $370. next i bought some surround speakers which are matching ones for my fronts which were s/h also and they were $70. as you can see im still under $500.. then i bought a decent centre which was $95, and now im looking for a sub. wiring cost me about $100 for everything, all the optical, rca's, speaker wire etc.

if you are impatient maybe this is the best way to go as you can keep adding to it, so long as the peices you buy will support your added components.

most of the surround system for $500 and under will be OK but you will find that most if not all wont be able to spport video and will come with audio receivers rather than an av receiver.

hope this helps you a little bit!

I put this package together for you from Amazon.com for a total of $500.53. Includes a Sub woofer and DVD player. You might be able so to the same w/ other brands but I am a nut for Pioneer. Run all the video to the back of the TV and all Audio to the receiver. This will get you going and to allow you to upgrade the speakers down the road.

If you really want to do it right, start auditioning speakers. find out what YOU like the sound of. Then, if your budget is tight, buy the R/L speakers YOU like, not the whole system that you can afford. From there you can later add a center, a sub and surrounds. Don't settle for an okay system to get you by, it's a waste of your money and you won't be satisfied. Do not be afraid to take the next few years to finish piecing your system together, in the long run you will save money and be happier overall.

Right now you may just want to have something to satify you right away, later on you will regret having your wasted money on something just to get your by. Do it right the first time and build a system you can enjoy for years to come.

I think you are a little too "caught up" with the HDMI going to the AVR. Many of us prefer to run the sources directly to the display so I wouldnt worry about it. If 500 bucks is your budget then a HTIB may be your best option and would be better than using the TV speakers. Look at the pro reviews(http://www.audioholics.com/reviews/htib/yamaha-yht-585bl) on the HTIB and see if one of them will work out for you. If you catch the HT bug later down the road, you can move the HTIB into the bedroom.

If you are going HTIB, that Yamaha does not look too bad. YAPO is and automatic setup and room acoustics calibration system that does most of the setup adjustments and even tells you if you get the phasing of a speaker incorrect. Although I have not personally listened to HTIB, I have noticed that an Onkyo system is also mentioned as an acceptable HTIB. You might try the search forum function and look for HTIB and you might find other forums on the subject.

Also, if you are going to a big box store you may be able to see HTIB but often they are just on the shelves and not hooked up. It may be hard to get to listen to different alternatives. Either case you should also shop the internet for your HTIB and see if it is sufficiently cheaper after shipping to buy over the internet. If it does not come with the cables you need (i.e. optical and HDMI) you can buy them cheap from monoprice.com (about $4 each) and get them in two or three days. No sense in buying expensive (i.e. Monster) cables which is all they carry at a lot of retail stores. If you can't wait, Walmart has cables that are less expensive than the big box and audio stores but the same cable (optical for example) is about $20. Recommend not to buy extended warranty. Buy Japanese or Korean brand electronics and you should have a pretty reliable setup. Have fun shopping and good luck.
