Hey all,

I'm thinking of purchasing an AV system, but can't find much info about the speakers. I'm looking at getting 4 Mordaunt Short 902i Bookshelf speakers, a 905i center, and a 309i sub. Further, I'm looking to power it with a Denon 1706.

Are these speakers a good fit with the receiver?

Are Mordaunt Short good speakers?

Is the 902i-905i-309i a good combination for both HT use and for music?

Please share your experience with these. Thanks!

M-S speakers are very well regarded by many on this forum, including me. The main reason I got my present speakers was the cabinetry - I wanted real veneer instead of vinyl. Sound quality was, IMHO, very good. The receiver you mention is also a very good choice. There's an awful lot of very good equipment out there these days. Keep reading this and other AV forums, and you'll get a good feel for what's considered good "bang for the buck"

Ok, thanks for the advice. I've read many of the reviews for other speakers, but it's hard to find them around town to listen to. It seems that I can read for a long time and everyone has really good reviews about everything. Listeningwise, I listed to a Definitive (PM 350?) setup, a Klipsch arrangement (about the same size), and the MS listed above. For some reason, the MS sounded way better and I'm not an audiophile by any means.

I am looking for balance of bang-for-your-buck and quality. Thanks again for your input.

Anyone with an opinion on a Denon 1906 over a Denon 1706?

The Denon 1906 is a better unit for the $100 or less you'll spend getting it.
- On Screen Display
-Preouts for Zone 2 (If you go to 7.1 and decide you want a set of speakers elsewhere in the house)
- Better Amplifer

All right. Thanks for the heads-up on the 1906. That helps.

So the way I see it:
MS 902i 4x$170=$680
MS 905i $200
MS 309i $350
=$1230 for the 6-piece setup

Anything I'm missing? Should I be looking at something else for 1200?

I like the Denon 1906. The HK AVR 240 as well.

Thank for the advice; it helps to get additional opinions.

An additional opinion: sounds like you like the sound of the mordaunt, i agree is a great bang for your buck. I would however, suggest that you look at a different sub for your configuration. Check out the HSU STF-2 sub to complete your system. its 50 bucks more than the mordaunt but i think you will hear and feel a considerable difference. Don't worry about it being from a different manufacturer.
