i currently have a Onkyo CS-210 mini stereo system. this system will be used in my room mainly. lets say if i ever want to use it in a bigger room, iknow the amp will not be able to power bigger speakers. will it be possible to use the audio outputs of the reciever to send signal to a seperate amplifier, which will then power my bigger speakers.

heres and example

-onkyo cs-210 only powers 20w/channel
-i use preouts to send signal to seperate amplfier which can send 200w/channel
- i use the amplifier to connect to my speakers

this kind of setup, will it damage my Onkyo Cs-210 system or not?

The Onkyo system has pre/outs or just speaker(power) outs. If just speaker outs you would need a step-down converter to lower the overall output to a more manageable signal, though in common practice it is not practical. I would suggest getting a Sony 5 disc carousel changer, for your parties. It is in the $100 neighborhood.

if i just get a cd changer it wont work.

my onkyo system is a cd reciever. so it plays cds but also works as an reciever for other inputs ssuch as tv or dvd. but its not sufficient for bigger rooms. therefore use the preouts from the Onkyo reciever to external amplifier to power larger speakers.

this is the onkyo system, if it will help u understand more clearly

It says it has a Sub preout which doesn't help. Does the unit have a set of Red an White RCA jacks that say Preout next to them. Speaker, or high level outputs aren't practicall for using as a standard output to an amplifier. Even with a converter there will likely be a significant loss in quality. I would recommend a 5 disc CD player, a preamp, and an amp.

yes it does have a pair of rca jacks, red and white that say preout

Then it should work fine as a pre-amp. All you need is a set of Y-adapters, a Multi channel amp and some speakers.

I think I missed something......you want to connect a shelf system to an amp to power bigger speakers for a bigger room so why not drop the shelf system and connect your components to the amp your buying and use the dvd as the cd player and other inputs for whatever els you want ? unless you already have an amp that only hase 1 input and no EQ ect. than I would say yes if you have the outputs for it/rca outputs or if you want just cut the other ends of the rca jack and connect them to the shelf system and keep the volume low and use the power amp's volume control

Your mini system with 20 watts may power efficient loud speakers just fine. Something 92db or better. I would try it out. Just because speakers are psychically larger does not mean they require more power to drive, they could need less in fact.

The MTX I mentioned are 92db@1watt. So figure you will be able to get just a tad over 104db with 20 watts. With a 200 watts per channel amp figure that you could acheive a little above 113db which is screaming loud. Consider that in just easy listening situations you may be listening to 95db on average, maybe even less. If the speakers are putting out 113db, you won't be able to hear people talking at all, least of all hear what you are thinking.

your more likely to damage bigger speakers with less power than more power not to mention degrading the life of the shelf system you will probably be running the bookshelf system at near full power and causing more distortion

where is the treble?.....lol
