Is this location troublesome?

Hi: I just ordered the x-sub and should be getting it this week. I have had to deal with a lot trying to find a place for it because of major complaints from my aunt and cousin implying I am taking over the livingroom and going to make the house shake.

Anyways the one spot they would preffer is the corner position right behind the TV and receiver as seen on these pics (more appreciable on the top picture). I've heard that corner positioning is preffered but I am worried about it being directly behind the receiver might mess it up or something. Also in what direction should the sub be pointing if I can put it there? Any input and suggestions are appreciated.

Putting it behind the TV should be OK. Deep bass isn't very directional at all. Normally you are fine as long as the sub is somewhere in front of you rather than behind you. Yes, you will shake the house.

The placement behind your tv will be fine. HOWEVER, I noticed you have a picture tube television. If the subwoofer is not shielded, watch out. An unshielded powerful sub magnet can wreak havoc on a tube set when in close proximity.

Is it permanent damage that it can cause? What can I do to avoid it?

Not permanent as far as I know. It will just cause color shifts in your image. I had some speakers too close once, and the corners of the screen turned greenish. You can try it, and if that doesn't work move it or something. There are probably some simple cheap options for adding a bit of shielding if it's not too bad.

The simple cheap option is moving the sub farther from the set if it causes any picture distortion. It is not, in most cases, a permanent effect. However it could be if left very close for too long. The rainbows caused can be removed with a degaussing tool or, if the televison has a built in degausser.

Prices on lead sheets or other shielding materials can get quite pricey.

Your best bet is to put the sub in place, then slowly move the tv into position and watch for any changes on screen. A solid blue screen is easy to tell if there are any distortions.
